Just got three Phoenix roebelenii arranged in a cluster. They are about 3 feet tall. I Put them in the ground same day due to they were root bound (15 gallon pot).
I live in zone 9-a and put them on a hill with good drainage. Any pointers / suggestions as to their care? Anything would be helpful. Thanks, George in San Antonio.
Pigmy date palm (Phoenix roebelenii) pointers?
They like more water than other phoenix palms.Never let them get TOO dry. They will let you know if they need watered more they actually wilt to a certain extent. I have about 10 of them here at home. in pots mind you. not winter hardy here. :-)
Here in zone 9b they are effortless palms... once in the ground, hard to screw up.. like shade, like sun, like mix of either. What they don't like, as mentioned above, is drying out... too commonly planted in Southern California in public places and then not watered enough makes for a lot of anemic looking palms. Can't possibly water too much, so water away. Fertilize as needed (if clay soils, will probably hardly ever need it).
