We just got home and 5 minutes later the winds picked up and poured. Have never seen it like this before. Here are some pictures of what it did. We could hear branches hitting the side of the house. This picture is just across from the side. Luckly the trees didn't fall into the house.

Made it home just in time
Oh my, that's incredible.
What was this? Thunderstorm? Toronado? Shear winds? Do they know yet and was it isolated to your area?
So glad that you made it inside and safe and sound.
Thanks. We were glad we made it home in time. We were getting continuous lightning flashes, pouring rain and than the wind just picked up incrediblely. Not sure if it was a tornado or just extreme winds. To me it looked like when you see on the news when a hurricane hits except I know we don't live close to the ocean so it wasn't a hurricane.
wow, Have you heard from the others in Wpeg, Pam, Echoes,Inanda etc,are they OK. Check in folks! Hopefully environment Canada will be able to make a statement about what happened for you.
No I haven't heard from anyone else yet. It could have hit Echoes because the winds were coming from the south where she is.
Sheesh! All my beautiful purple delphiniums have disappeared from view. Flattened. It started last night and we had another inch this morning. But it came again this morning. We lost power not long ago for awhile. Think my area is OK, but we may have had a bit of hail last night. I don't even want to go and look because of all the skeeters.
Wow you got it bad in your area Donna. Haven't heard anything from inanda or pickle. Expect things are still happening with the NALS show.
Oh Donna! :( I wonder if it was plough winds that went through there? It looks like the Battlefords and Moose Jaw did when those winds went through.
You should be able to tell who need a roof job in your neighborhood, Donna. Funny the city can send out someone to put up a sign to stay off the sidewalk, but nobody with a chainsaw to clear the road. Suppose you have to wait your turn.
Well DH was coming from the cottage so he brought the chainsaw with him. He and I and a few other guys were moving the branches off the street so that the traffic wouldn't bottle neck as much. I moved a whole bunch of branches from the back and piled them up. Still have to move the bigger branches at the front and side of the house. Thank goodness we don't have a window on the side that faces the street. The huge branch would have for sure gone through. I could barely move it.
Glad you're okay, Brenda.
OMG
Toronado.....? thank God you fine and in home intime.
Kaleem
Thank you, Kaleem. I don't think it was a tornado. I think it was just what Pam called it plough winds. It was scary with just DD and I at home.
Dictionary gives two spellings:
1. plough
2. plow
Looks like the second spelling is used for plow winds.
Straight-line winds
The straight-line winds of thunderstorms (different from the rapidly shifting winds of tornadoes) are also known as gust-front winds, plow winds, and downbursts.
A thunderstorm is considered to be severe when it produces straight-line winds of 58 mph (50 knots) or higher. When the National Weather Service issues a severe thunderstorm warning based on the wind criterion, that means the storm is expected to produce straight-line winds of at least 58 mph somewhere in the warn area.
Because of frictional drag and evaporative cooling, the rain area of a thunderstorm is usually associated with descending air - a downdraft. As descending air nears the ground, it rushes out ahead of the storm, thus producing the characteristically gusty, cooling winds that we experience at the onset of a thunderstorm.

Wow! That must have been some storm. Glad you are all OK.
I imagine that the gardens have been severely damaged though.
Hope that you didn't permanently lose too many valuable plants other than those poor trees.
Ann
I had some perennials squished from the big branches that fell on the side of the house. I was worried about my brugs possibly being snapped into pieces but they are okay. Thanks, Ann.
:) Donna
I'm OK. No tree damage around us though blocked streets/trees down all around.
Tons of lilies flattened though. Sad --- with our Neepawa show this coming weekend.
Orania, Boogie Woogie & George Slate stood tall with no damage. Most of the other asiatics flattened.
NALS is finished and cleaned up. Just came home to get changed to go out to dinner with some who are not travelling till tomorrow.
What a blast NALS was. Good weather until the storm. On the bus tour to various gardens (Jeffries in Portage and Neepawa) there was about 10 mins of heavy rain in Neepawa. (Lily Nook) Everyone got back on the buses till it was over.
More stems than NALS in Hamilton (!!!) in spite of horribly hot weather the week prior. Echoes, Wilma and Inanda all won ribbons. The alberta contingent really cleaned up with many stems on head table.
Tons of people said it was the best most friendly NALS they had ever attended. Not one single glitch. Yippee for Manitoba. !!!
Inanda
Just heard on the news about your latest lovely bout of weather. So glad to hear that you are all OK, but really sorry about your flattened flowers.
You know you can get a good skeeter repellant made of hemp oil from a place up near Barrie here in Ontario. If you are concerned about putting DEET on your skin, it's an alternative.

Best of luck with the clearing up of the storm damage, and hope no one loses anything really important.
~marilyn
Thanks, Marilyn. I didn't lose any of my non budded brugs....lol. That's what I was concerned about.
:) Donna
Pretty amazing that the buds hung on, with all the wind, rain and hail that I've been hearing about. What a sigh of relief you must have had!!

Congratulations Ladies!!!! You have done yourselves and Manitoba proud!
Thanks, Christine. I was just glad that no damage happened to the house.
:) Donna
Wow!!! I'm glad to see you are all okay. When I heard about the storm on the news last night I wondered how it had affected you and your gardens.
Thank you. It was scary watching it happen.
Wow, really scarey to see such a familiar sight on the Canadian Forum! Glad your house escaped damage.
Pati
Unbelievable! I'm so glad that you're all OK. Weird how it looks like all the branches went into the streets and not toward the houses. Weird, but very, very lucky.
Thanks, Pati. I couldn't believe it either. Now I know how you all feel.
Thank you, Liz. Luckly the side of the house didn't have windows because that's where most of the big branches were hitting.
:) Donna
Just reading this thread now, been busy with familiy vistors all weekend. Looks like you had some nasty, nasty weather, Donna. Glad it is all over and with few casuaties.
Yes thanks, Donna!
:) Donna
Donna:
Your photographs are incredible and familiar. They could be photographs of South Florida after a bad storm.
I'm glad that you and your family and everyone else escaped serious injury and damage. I'm also glad that you arrived home before the worst of it hit. Stay safe!
Veronica :-)
Thanks, Veronica. Now I know how all of you feel.
Take care to!
:) Donna
