When to harvest pumpkins?

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

I have one pumpkin ('Cinderella') that is starting to turn orange. According to Johnny's Selected Seeds, they are a deep red-orange when mature. Besides going by the color, how else do I know when I should take it off the vine? Tamara

When the plants begin to die back. The shell should be hard and the stem should be dry and hard. If the weather is still warm cut the stem off up where it attaches to the vine and let them harden off in the sun for ten days. If the weather is not dry and warm put them inside with lots of dry air and they will cure that way to. Ernie

LOL! It's buried so deep in the jungle patch, I can only see bits of it myself. I have no idea how I'm going to get it out. ;-) Tamara

A hint for pumpkin growers.
-
If you have children of grandchildren, when the pumpkins are small and tender scrap their name on their personal pumpkin.
-
As it grows, so will their name.
Works on certain large squash too !
