Ants on my passionvine

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Can anyone tell me what kind of ants these are and what they are doing? Should I continue to just ignore them?

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i have ants on alot of my vines and dont seem to hurt them. i have one vine if it doesnt have ants it wont flower at all. i think they help pollinate too so unless you see them chewing the buds i wouldnt worry about them.

if you have aphids on the vine then they are after the bi product ahpids secrete. so check for bugs and if none

then ignore. some plants need them for things. maybe someone will come alond and say what they need them for

If Passiflora has extrafloral nectaries then the ants are attracted to them as a food source. It shouldn't be a problem unless you have the plant indoors.

imzadi the biproduct is called honeydew, and aphids sure make a lot of it.

No aphids at all. The ants have been on the vine for weeks now, just going back and forth...doing something. Pollinating is what the guess is, which is good.

I also have small ants on my passi vine, doesn't seem to hurt anything.

yes if you look at the leaf good you will see it has a substance coming from each node
{if the vine is healthy},... its sweet that is what the ants are after.
have a nice evening,

RH, you have just explained why the ants were sitting at the nodes. Yay, that must mean my vine is going healthy, which is great since it was a small cutting from a swap last year. :)

Your Welcome,... i have had the same worry in the past and a trader let me in on what was going on with it.
But i had to check it out and taste it and sure enough it was sweet.
Have a good day

Yes that's where the extrafloral nectaries are, at these nodes.
