anyone have an external pump?

Cincinnati, OH

I'm persuaded by the info on external pumps that they last way longer and are cheaper to operate than submersibles. Plus, the motor can be repaired if it has problems; submersibles are apparently sealed so they're pretty much throw-aways if something stops working.

Any thoughts, feedback? Before I make the big purchase, I want to hear from some folks with experience.

Wow, for such an active forum, I'm amazed that no one right now is interested in talking about equipment!

I guess it's just one of those weeks ... lol

As a general rule, it seems that submersibles are also a good deal cheaper AND quiter (for us humans) than external pumps. I have a dual duty (internal/external) pump that I keep submersed for no other reason than in an effort to maximize the water flow. I figure every foot that I am sucking up from the pond is another foot I am losing on the head.

Boooo. Hisss.

I recently upgraded from 2 submersible sump pupms(?) to a dry pump, what a difference! the old pumps looked like something off a shipwreck, the rust and gunk of years of submersion make service nasty. I am lifting water up 25 feet to a 130 ft. waterfall system, with the submers. I had 2 with 3" lines, now I use 1 dry pump with a manifold, I even added a third 3 inch line for irrigation, -it is like a fire hose!! The submers. were $300 apiece, the big one $600 -a no brainer!

A DRY pump? Do you use it to move water? LOL. The difference between a centifugal lift pump and a submersible is mostly esthetics until you wish to lift the water more than 25 feet from the source to the pump. Then it becomes an efficiency concern because some water has to be re-circulated through a venturi to create the vacuum to allow the atmospheric pressure to lift the water in the centrifugal (jet) pump. Submersibles do not have that problem since they are never 25 feet above the water when in use.

don't know all the jargon, hate it, not interested. BUT I have an external pump which can't be heard above the sound of the water running back into the pond. I love it because I can easily check on it; I have no worries about things leaking into the pond and regular wade ins to service, and it does the job well without whining. I have a 20x12 4' deep pond; so try to keep overhauls to a minimum.

On the other hand, I don't have or want a massive waterfall, so that miight have influenced my choice. This lovely pump has more than enough power for keeping my pond water passing through the filter at a steady rate.
