Transplant to the State of Jefferson

Gazelle, CA

Hi to everyone from the tippy-top of California! Transplanted New Yorker here. No idea what I can grow here, but I'm eager to find out! Any fellow Siskiyou County folks out there?

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Lots of cool stuff to learn here...Dave has spoiled us miserably...we hardly ever go anyplace else.

I can see why -- I'm becoming quite the addict, myself! Thanks for the tip!

Thanks to everyone for your greetings. My computer has been very temperamental about sending messages to this site, so don't think I'm ignoring you!

Hiouchi, CA(Zone 8b)

Welcome to DG Hanna
i don't think there will be very many people here who understand
what the "State of Jefferson" is :-) or even know where Gazelle is :-)
BJ is west of you in Weaverville, she should be growing a lot of same plants you can
i am in So Calif but getting close to retiring to Crescent City
which is a zone 9 being so close to the coast so i will be growing different things :-)
you get some real cold up there, do you know what your zone is there ?
i'm guessing 7 or 8 ?

Dick

Gazelle, CA

Good morning, Dick--
I had never heard of the "State of Jefferson," either, until I moved here. But I figured that heading should attract the attention of any close neighbors! Not too many of us way up here. As for Gazelle, it's definitely the smallest town I've lived in, and I've lived in some small ones. People do seem to love their gardens here, and there are some wonderful ones that I drive past.
The cooperative extension agent tells me that we are in Zone 7. Because of the many microclimates here in the mountains, I suspect we are 7a or even 6b in spots. Winter temps usually don't go below 10F, although it does happen. I haven't lived here very long, and the climate is so different from upstate NY, where I came from. Hot dry summers are something I've never had to deal with, so I'm starting to learn about xeriscaping. Winters are much milder here, though -- a plus in my book.
Haven't explored Crescent City or the other coast towns yet, but it's on my "to-do" list. Sounds like a great place to retire to!
Thanks for the welcome.
Hannelore
