New additions to my garden this year

Victoria,, BC(Zone 8b)

Some new sunflowers - I like this colour and will try and save some seeds.

Blue poppy -As this is their first year I am snipping off the blooms as soon as they have flowered. It is a bit paler than I thought it would be.

And lastly - an oriental lily that I have already lost the tag for. (It is in my files somewhere). It is an unusual shade and smells lovely.

Heather, your sunflowers are wonderful! I've never seen any that colour before. And the poppy and oriental lily are very very pretty. Good growing!!

Love the color of your Sunflower, Heather. So unusual and lovely.

Can I ask why as it is the first year for your pretty blue poppy, you had to snip the spent blooms right away?

Victoria,, BC(Zone 8b)

Donna, apparently they die if you let them go to seed the first year of blooming.

Campbell River, BC(Zone 8a)

I thought you were supposed to snip before it blooms Heather. LOL Yeah, right, eh?

They're all beautiful Heather. I just love the colour of the sunflowers. Oh dear, what am I doing on here. I'm going kayak camping for the weekend and have to get up town and do some shopping so I can pack, etc., etc., etc.

Sandy, I thought as well that you did not let them bloom at all but I read on another post that as long as you cut the bloom off before it sets seed its ok. I have two plants so I am hedging my bets and not letting the other one flower at all ! If anyone knows for sure - please jump right in !!
Have a great time kayak camping and I hope the weather improves.

Uh oh! Mine are first year poppies, and I didn't know, and I didn't do any "snippin'"... I guess I better save the seeds, huh? Sheesh

Depends if you have grandis or betonicifolia(the one that's supposed to be monocarpic), and then I don't think it's a sure thing. From what I understand taking the buds off is supposed to make it grow another clump of leaves to help it overwinter. Wait till Todd gets back. He will probably know the real scoop on that.

I'll do that, echoes. I remember now that he has the North American Rock Garden Society conference in St. John's. Acccording to the the DG Calendar of Events, it runs until Sunday. I'll ask him early next week. Got my fingers crossed!!!
