BioFilter Construction for small pond

Dansville, NY(Zone 6a)

I went out shopping today to get stuff for my biofilter and pond
didnt get everything i needed becouse im a good shopper and
had to come home to check ebay for prices .. LOL
Stoped at 2 pool and spa stores asking about old pool liners
and my timing was perfect, both are doing pools and i have to
go back tomarrow and might have a 24 foot pool liner to play with
maybe 2 of them ..

Well, I got me a container to build the filter and some PVC fittings
and pipe.

Here is what i got,

2 , 20 gallon utility tubs (just using one for now) ... 6 bucks each @ General Dollar Store
1 fiberglass Shower drain , Hardware Store (do it best) , 7 bucks
2 inch pvc pipe 3 foot
3/4 inch pvc pipe 5 foot
3 3/4 pvc elbows.

Things i might go back for unless i find them in the shed,
3/4 inch ball valve and 3/4 inch union (makes things so they come apart easy)

Still have to get the media and skippys bacteria stuff.

my pond is only going to be around 5 x 10 or 8 x 10 and max 2 foot deep
in one end. Im going to try to just build up the ground with topsoil and not
do any digging, huge maple tree in the area and my huge rhody plant.
so the ground will be roots city.

i dont have any pictures of the rest of the construction
things started moving to fast and i wanted to see how
the waterfalls came out. But anyways i will explain what
the rest of the biofilter was ...

From the last picture posted.

I got some plastic grating and cut 4 pices of 1/2 inch pvc pipe
about 3 inches long , drilled a hole through the end of each one
and fastend them to the grating with nylon ties for legs to hold the
grating up.

This grating is like what is in a 2' x4' floresent cealing light.

Cut a hole in the center for the water feed tube to pass up through.

slide the grating down in the tub then add about a foot thick of poly fill ( pillow stuffing )
in the tub. then i added a 18 inch round floor scrubbing/buffing disk on the top.

Thats it , im still wating on my bacteria (good guys) to add to the pond and it
will be completed.

I'm guessing that you have either a liner, or preform pond down in those rocks.... good job of hiding it!

How is the water flow? Are you happy with the power and filtration?

Keep us informed. I know there will be others interested in your invention!

I had a 5x5 edpm pond liner but it was like 2 feet to short but i used it anyways.
then i coverd it with 3 layers of 4mil clear plastic. I could only dig down 3 inches
then hit a big big root from the maple tree so i just got a load of top soil and built
up the edge around the pond.

So far, i havent added anything to the pond and its still nice and clear.
got 2 water plants in there , cant rember there name but its like the parrot
feather plant.

Im just using a 310 GPH pump and the waterfalls flow is perfect for me.
I might add another and see what happens.
