petal problem ?

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

My one brug with blossoms seems to have a problem. So far three of the blooms which have come closest to opening fully have had one tendril which has failed to grow. On the attached photo there is a distortion on part of the corolla that I don't understand. Possibly due to moisture ? or what i don't know. Maybe not a problem, but as a rank novice I have to ask a lot of questions. There is also the curiosity of several flowers bursting out of the calyx at an obscene angle instead of nice and orderly. Is this a common trait ? Any advice will be joyfully accepted.

But the rest of the little ones seem to be happy.

They all look so great in that group shot.

So is this a seedling or a known cross? I have had distorted blooms due to a bad case of spider mites and do to faulty genes. The spider mites you can cure, the faulty genes you can't. Also maybe irregular watering, but by looking at your last picture, you take great care of yours so I doubt it is that.

I wish I could be of more help to you!

The flowering one is CC's Enchanted X ?, so there is a possibility of some genetic anomaly. Will have to wait and see how the majority open as the season continues.

That is the worst when you grow a seed all the way out and it turns into such a dud after so much work and so many hopes. I sure hope it corrects itself and blooms great for you!!

balvenie, breeding for doubles increases the possibility to receive doubles with distorted or deformed flowers. They often have a second but incomplete set of a bud in a bud.

Thank you Monika, I bet that is what is happening. The plant has an abundant supply of buds so I'm hoping for many to open fully.
