why aren't my burgs blooming?

Gonzales, LA(Zone 9a)

I have 2 burgs that are several years old and one gets morning and noon sun, the other gets afternoon sun but neither do very much blooming, both plants are huge and have lots of leaves and are beautiful plants but no blooms....they get plenty of ferterlizer because they're in the same beds as my daylilies.....maybe they're over fed and just make plant???? Do these things like stress? and not much to eat??? I see a lot of people growing them in pots and you all have gobs of blooms and here I am growing them in the grown and have no blooms.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

they need the ferttilizer. i am no expert but i miracle grow 2 x a week and also give them a slow release type fert.. i have leaves but no blooms. but mine are olny about 6 months old too.

they have to form Ys before they bloom. some frome what i understand take longer to bloom then others.

i am really being patient with mine and hope at least one plant i have blooms.

it also from what i understand takes longer if they are cut to the ground each winter.

hopefully this helps some and maybe someone else can add to this.

same here i feed feed no buds blooms. nothing big leaves.

I have Pink Favorite, who has small leaves and is short and bloom, bloom, blooms. I have CDW and it is a stick with a couple of leaves and three buds. Then I have Pink Beauty and Rosamond and they are 11 or 12 feet tall, with Ys every place and HUGE leaves and no buds. All of mine are treated the same. I do not know the answer...I do know that I'm going to strip the leaves off the bottoms of every brug that has no buds - can't hurt, ya think??

What are you feeding? Maybe you need to change to a different fertilizer. I have heard of people that have no luck getting a brug to bloom, but I've not yet run into that problem. Good Luck. I'm sure I would be screaming inside if I couldn't get blooms from one of mine.

Shirley thats what i'm doing but i'm mumbling out loud loudly.. Sherrylike sounds like you got a really good start with Brugs.. way to go.Dayflower we will just have to wait see but lets not hold our breaths!!!!

Oh, hope, thank you! I have a positive attitude but it doesn't always show in my garden. Sometimes I wonder why I do all this, then, I went out tonight and guess what?? Momma Maya is expecting, she has twins for sure and maybe more. They are precious and just made my day!!! Good luck, hope, I'll be keeping tabs on you and I'll be sending you my very best designer vibes....

Thought you'd like to see my beautiful bush "without" any blooms.....see I can really grow an angel trumpet....but no blooms. It has in years past bloomed good in May, and the crazy thing would have yellow and pink blooms on the same limb. I don't know what kind it is, just a cutting I got from someone. I does get frozen down to the ground each year but I cover the roots with pine straw in the winter so it comes back in March and grows fast and usually blooms in May & off and on all summer, this spring & summer it hasn't done much at all. We did have an unusually cool spring here in the Baton Rouge area so most things were late.

Dayflower, maybe you have an HHG or Desiree. I've never seen but one bloom on mine.

Edited to say, I overlooked your post saying it had bloomed in years past. If it was pink, it wasn't the two Brugs I mentioned.

Some brugs are not good bloomers like Ada said. It sure is a big beautiful bush. I would stop fertilizing and see what happens. It sure has enough food to make one so big. Mine in the ground seem to bloom as well as the ones I have in pots. I will cross my fingers for you. So frustrating!!!!! The 2 colors you describe makes me think of Frosty, thought that one blooms profusely usually.

dayflower, why don't you root some cuttings, then 'play' with the brug, strip some of her bottom leaves off and change her fertilizer and add some 'tonic', like fish meal, and see what happens. Seems, to me, that it can't hurt and might help. I'm pretty sure it wont' kill her because I've done some really awful stuff to mine and they've lived through it, and most turned out better. Hope something works for you. I've heard many in our area say that they get the majority of their blooms in the fall...

Brugie, Shirley, you seem to be the only one that gets all of yours to bloom. What do you fertilize with? Jeanete

Oh Shoot!! I wish I had known that Desiree was hard to bring to bloom before I bought her. I have two planted in my yard and no buds on either. I did have H.G. bloom late last Fall.

Jeannette...this year I used some fertilizer tablets that I bought from AmLeo. I also use CalMag 15-5-15 with minors and a couple of plants that weren't looking real good, got an extra dose of minors added to the fertilizer. Now, I have to tell you that since it has been hot...once a week is all I've used the CalMag. I just can't work in this heat. My Harlot is getting ready to bloom again, but I do have several that have tiny buds, but they are just sitting there. This heat is brutal right now. I'm really anxious to see the next two or three Monika brugs that will be opening their first buds soon.

I think this year will be like it was a couple of years ago when it was hard to get them to bloom heavily in the heat, but in the fall the blooms were all over the plants.

Shirley, I do think the heat has something to do with it. I'm not that far from Gonzales where Dayflower lives. I definitely think mine all bloom much better in the fall after we cool off some.

Quite a few of mine have bloomed this year, but not in big flushes yet. The humidity this year, along with the heat has started earlier than usual.

I recall one time that Carter (in Houston) said that the only thing he can get to bloom is Pink Favorite. His climate must be fairly similar to ours.

WOW Patricia I am so impressed you got HG to bloom. You belong to the HG club!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks Kay. I guess if it is a bad year, we just move on to the next. I've only had one year that I didn't get blooms until fall and it was a hot one. I'm sure you are right about this....I'll be patient and pray for cool weather and rain...oh my do we need rain.
