I'm visiting in the US now, but return to Dublin on Sunday. I look forward to returning and seeing 2 weeks progress on my 4 month old brugs. I wonder if I dare hope for a bloom before the end of the year - started them in March, I think.
I've seen postings about MG, Messenger, aspirin, Green something, alfalfa, etc. - Curious here, I am wondering - does anyone here have any reportings on using worm tea and casings with brugs.
I'm taking some worms back for the compost pile - but wonder if I should take more for a worm bin to collect the tea and casings. Doug, my better natured half, has more than the bin will hold and is ready to send me with a bag.
Worm tea and casings?
I would definately take them...I have used casting this summer but I have not done it in a scientific manner so I could really tell if the castings esp. beneficial..but they have to help.
I have never used them but I have heard great things in general about them. I bought a worm house too several years ago but never got the worms to live in it. Maybe I should now. I can just picture you trying to get thru customs. I wonder how many people take them on such a great trip. LOL
Good luck on your Irish brugs!
the worms end up in a plastic bag in my jacket. or carry-on - I don't claim them...LOL
I'll post pictures of the brugs when I get back - finally have a new computer after a year - I didn't feel comfortable loading any software to my work computer, but I bought one here - US is definitely the country to shop.
I also just got some new seeds from a dear friend and will now have way too many for my tiny back garden...maybe they'll end up in the parking lot - a very NICE area....imagine will get a few compliments ...or....What the heck is that?
sbarr, I use compost a lot in my garden. I also make a compost tea and water frequently with it. In my opinion it works wonders. My compost pile has many worms in it and of course their castings. It's my firm belief that it helps the plants build up a resistance to many ailments they encounter. I water my potted brugs with it also.
Good Luck at Customs with your wiggly pockets. Beware! I believe you could get a hefty fine for doing this and not claiming them. Last year I couldn't even bring flower seeds in. They took them from me. They said they had to be vacumm packed in order to allow them in or something like that. HE JUST DIDN'T LIKE ME AT ALL. :-(
In light of all of the reading I've done about invasiveness since thre were some interesting posts in another DG forum, I've decided not to bring any worms over - they may or may not be compatable with local ones. Better to err on the cautious side. I'll just take the price hit and hopefully find and buy locally there.
You know, I bought 40 lbs of worm casing compost at Home Depot, and it was CHEAP. Could make a tea out of that. Plus my own leaf/grass compost mulch has its share of worms, too.
I mix worm castings in with the potting soil I use with the brugs. They seem to be doing well.
