Black Magic Elephant Ear

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I thought the more sun these got, the blacker they'd get. well, mine is in full brutal sun w/ plenty of water but the leaves are rather faded. Is this normal at this time of year or is there something I can do to get the black coloration. thanks

in Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Put it in shade. Black plants don't do well in full sun here in TX

Both pots of mine get some sun but not a whole lot. They are in bog pots and doing fine.

I don't know. I have 3 young plants, from last year. Since I haven't seen runners, I'm going to guess they're bulb. When they came out in early spring they were pretty black but have been fading over the summer.

Man, I'm still sorry I missed the Mobile MG sale!

Mine started this summer as small plants with fibrous roots.

Ely?? Are you back? Is everything okay??

I have all my black ones in the full blazing sun, some in the ground and some growing in nothing but water and they are BLACK! LOL

Vossner, That is what my Jet black wonder does.... so you might want to look for a black magic that has the stolon fibers/runners. there having a fall sale....

ely, who are you offering to?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Mine is in alot of shade.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Mine is in part sun/shade. It has grown quite large this year, and there is another one coming up. Could have been the hot June we had! I had to water everyday. Is the plant in a pot or the ground?

mine is totally in the sun but also in the pond...

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hmmm. They must really like water then ? The new leaves coming out do seem do be a bit darker since it's been raining everyday for the past week. I might have to try the new one sprouting out in the pond.

I read some where ...black magic is only for up to Zone 7b, I am in zone 9b and tried this plant but no success. Is this zone problem?

In MS, zone 8a BM must be in full sun to get that beautiful black. It needs almost constant moisture and plenty of fertilizer. I call them my pig ears-

bward, how old is your BM? also, what is the name of the plant on the left corner of our pix, looks like a canna or ginger w/ black vein? Looks great next to BM

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Vossner, the BM is about 3 or 4 years old. I find after this time I need to thin them out. They start growing over one another and their size starts getting smaller.

The other plant is a curcuma ginger.
