Im having a real hard time with spider mites this year and got to thinking of asking all of you brug pros what you do for keeping all the buds off them..Any thoughts?..I need help...judy
Maintenance of your Brugs
Judy, the product that I use is called MiteX it contains Bonide. I bought mine from the local nursery. One of my brugs. got spider mites as soon as I planted it out in the yard. I sprayed it every two weeks for a month with another product to no avail. But this has really worked. I stripped off all the leaves sprayed it and it is growing great now.
Judy, LOL, what a slip of the pen. But yes, the mighty mite is the bane of my existence. I get rid of them only to see them pop up somewhere else. I usually use Neem.
Patrica, where did you get this stuff???? Nosy people want to know. Though I hate to spray. Is it a systemic??
Thanks both of you...I tried an organic spray today and we shall see what happens...since I took all of mine in last fall Ive had aphids and spiedermites..never ever had so many bug problems..must be the hot weather this year so early...I will look for both of the chems youve recommended...Judy
Judy, that's interesting because my two favorites were wintered inside, with family that had LOTS of plants inside, last winter and they came out with mites. I dunno, but I'm not letting them outta might sight this winter...oh, and those two are no longer my favorites, I'm packing them up and shipping them to the compost pile, life is too short to keep bug magnets...I suspect the house were too warm and caused the mite invasion...
Im thinking that about mine too ..I will try and keep the breezewy cooler this winter....I also think if I stip all the leaves off the brugs that it will help keep them from getting bugs...ooh and send those compost plants to me...I hate to send anthing to compost...lol...Judy
I don't like it either, Judy, but I'd rather have 5 CGs than one CDW that doesn't like it here, she's worse each season, I will let her hatch these buds and if they aren't any better than the two she had last year, off she goes...I think it's my weather, not the brug...but I've never heard anyone rave about her...
Ive got a double white too but never have had it bloom but this is the first time ive had it...my friend had one bloom for her and it sure was pretty, but like you, there werent alot of blooms on it...mine isnt going in the compost even if it doesnt bloom...I am persistant...Judy
Well I can't see a darn thing on my brug leaves, even with a powerfull Jewelers glass, but the leaves all look so pale, reminds me of faint rust. would it be because we have had no rain for so long. I water every other day, to where my water bill has more than doubled, and I give them MG. even the buds are so small I am not sure some of them will make it.
Sounds like spider mites..I had the same thing and when you wipe the leave with your fingers you get orange smears....Judy
Doris, I know exactly what you are talking about. I have a group of rootings and, from the beginning, some have those lush, dark leaves and others look like you describe. CalMag has done it for me, have you tried it??
Sherry no CalMag around here, where can I get it.
Doris, there were a couple of sites and I'm pretty sure I ordered mine from this one. It was difficult to find and cost lots to have it shipped, but it did make my leaves blue and I love that. You are in a totally different zone and I know zero about any zone but my own, so I don't have a clue if it will work with your brugs or the particular brugs you have. Plus, I'm well known for falling for every snake oil that hits the market. I'd check with a more knowledgeable person, if I were you, before you go to the time/expense of ordering it. Let me know what you do and how it works out...after I got mine, and saw the difference, I was disappointed that I didn't know about it earlier...

One more thing Doris - I knew that CalMag was supposed to be excellent for brugs. The problem was that I could not find a vendor. I think it might be more available now but there was no outlet in Arky or any of the states surrounding Arky, last growing season, I have not tried this year, I'll just pay the extra and use Leonards...
I had spider mites last summer and fall and used Kelthane, Neem, and bunch of other stuff to no avail. I finally broke down and got some Avid. Sprayed it about three times and have never had the problem again.
Now if I can just get those darned grasshoppers and mealies!
Kay
Where can I buy Avid? I looked online and found a lot of information about it, but no where that actually sells the stuff, with the exception of a quart for $350. I'm having problems with spider mites and if Kelthane doesn't work, then I'm going to be up a creek.
try Rosemania Emily. You can get 8 ounces.

I was beseiged by spider mites and hit them with everything but a blowtorch!!! At the same time I upped by fertilizing and added CalMag with Epsom Salts and some newts eyelash and spit of witch... not more Spider Mites. I look every morning.
Please just nod and say 'great'...don't jinx it!!!!
Carol
Got to get me some of that spit of witch. GREAT
yeah, don't switch the witch spit
Gosh, I know a witch or 2. How do I get them to spit??
SherryLike the fertilizer that you buy from Leonards, how big of a bag is it? And how much do you use per gal? I can't find anywhere, where it gives that information. But you know the liquid of Cal/mag I got is working pretty darn good.
Linda
OK what is CalMag????? Im still battling spider lites and I spray those buggers everyday with hard hose spray...did the homemade brew and still they come back...
They WILL become resistant to whatever you are using constantly (listen to me, a newbie giving advice....but I feel I have a PhD in Spider Mite Murdering)...I switched back and forth from Oil/Soap to Neem Oil to Avid and would strip all/most of the leaves off before blasting them...and repeated the cycle every 5 or 6 days. I think the brugs got sick of my stipping them and blasting them and got rid of the pests...put out new leaves and voila!!!
LOL :>)
Kell, I bought the Mite X at Alden Lane nursery in Livermore. It works really well.
I have Mite X already so maybe I'll try a combination of things. I was doing neem, but it got too hot to use it. :(
