Freckles

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Another unusual bloom. This is a picture from last summer on a plant of mine. It did this on all blooms of two flushes. I wintered the plant in the cold garage this last winter and it now has buds, so I'm anxious to see if it blooms with freckles again. I was told that it could be from spraying with Avid, but since it did it on all blooms and flushes, I know it wasn't Avid. However, I sure don't know what it really is that caused this. If anyone has any ideas......I'm interested.

WOW, Shirley. Did it stay that way for several days? Have you seen the one Kell is calling 'Entertaining'?

I know you're anxious for it to bloom again, I'll be waiting for the post.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Linda, it stayed that way until the bloom dried and fell. Yes, I've seen Kell's picture.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Beautiful!! Have you registered it? If so when will it be released. I hope I'm not being too nosy.

That's exactly what I had in mind Shirley!
I find this bloom's striations more attractive. How close are they to opening and do you remember what the fragrance was like?

I'm in Peoria Wed-Fri for a freshman orientation with a DD. Wish I could sneak over Th or Fri but don't know if I'll be able to. Is there anything I can bring you, just in case?

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

That is really neat looking Shirley. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that it blooms that way for you again.

Patricia

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

That is so cool. Mine only is blotched for a day at most till it changes to a darker color. Can't wait to see the new pictures.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Blaine, It is only budded......tiny ones. It will be close to a month before it blooms, but I'll get pictures, especially if it blooms this way again. As for fragrance....yes, but I can't describe fragrance in brugs. Thanks Blaine, but I'm full up on plants right now. LOL! Judy, I'll email you. I'm thinking one of these in a trade for an English Bulldog puppy would be great. LOL! Let's see, how many arms and legs would I owe you? I think I'm running out.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Patricia, I have FM rooted, but the other one didn't make it. Will have to wait until later in the summer. Maybe you will find an extra cutting in the box when it comes. I'll wait to mail FM when you let me know it is okay.

Thanks Kell.

fragrance: I don't dally with "fruity overtones" and "subtle yet seductive"

Do I have to bury the nose or do I stand around sniffing the air trying to figure out where the aroma is coming from? I want to pester people walking down the street pretending they're not looking.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

sure is different Brugie, I rather like it. Look forward to seing the new blooms.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Do you have freckles in your family?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Dave...that's funny. Yes, there are a few freckles in our family. I have a daughter with auburn colored hair and a red headed granddaughter, both with freckles. Used to have a dog named Freckles, too. LOL! Thanks everyone. I will post pictures when it blooms this year, freckles or not.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Really cool! Love the freckles!!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

That's so unusual, Shirley. You grow the neatest brugs.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

It would be so neat if it stays that way.

How does one get on the FM list?

Shirley, a few weeks back you were asking about holes in leaves. Did they look like this?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I wish they did look like that. Mine had dozens of what looked like tears in them. I'm not seeing it happening to the new leaves, so I have no idea what it could have been unless we did have hail when I didn't know it. There are a lot of FM's out there now. If no one close to you has one, I'll see what I can do this fall. You will have to remind me in mid to late September, tho.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

haha, I'll have to remind myself to remind you.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Shirley I love it, it's like a tye-dyed brug. Really cool looking

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

I keep looking at this... those tendrils are really something also!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I had that last year with two unknown brugs, both orange, I didn't know it was unusual and mine weren't pretty and freckled like yours Brugie, they have buds so I'll be looking forward to seeing if they do that again...yours are really pretty, sorta like a variegated blossom...

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Shirley, she is awesome. I hope that she struts her stuff again this year.
I'll be watching!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Thanks you all. I'm hoping she does the same thing again too. Will let you know.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Just saw freckles, how much fun

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

That is gorgeous! Please do post pictures so that we can see if it happens again.

I had something very similar on a seedling last year too; It only put out a few flowers before frost (it was a late summer seedling) all spotted, but because the leaves also didn't look healthy (mites?) I left it in the ground to live or die. It lived and looks better leaf wise, but no blooms yet. Seeing that yours came back spotted, I'll be watching all the harder for buds.
I have healthy roses and camillias with similar flower patterns, so I don't know why it couldn't happen with brugs. I did hear somewhere that in those other plants the petal variegation it is the result of a harmless virus.
Good luck with this one, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for mine as well.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

If that's true, send me the harmless virus and I'll put it to work. LOL! Thanks for the info. I hope yours blooms with the variegation in the blooms too. We need some totally different flowers for variety.

Adrian, MI(Zone 5b)

Shirley, I love it!! I hope it does it again this year!!I love freckles!! I have a red headed Bro and sis!! It's a super special Brug.!!
I had hail last Fri. that put holes all through my Brugs and Hostas. I took off the worse leaves, but it sure did a job!! Broke off what it didn't put holes in,but that's Mother Nature. At least we didn't have a hurricane!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Bonnie, I'm sorry to hear you had the hail. I had it last year and could still have it this year. All of my stalks were speckled on one side. The brugs recover well from hail damage, but the hosta don't do so well. I hope you will still have some brugs that will bloom this year for you. If you get too much rain, send some my way. The ground is starting to crack pretty bad. I'm sure glad that most of my brugs are in pots, when it gets like this.

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

Harmless, in that it won't kill the plant or spread easily!! Are you into grafting? This is a quote from an article on viral variegation in camillias from the ishs site (don't let the word 'disease' scare you in this instance...

"The disease agent is not sap-transmissible and the symptoms can be reproduced only by grafting. "

I killed off my last grafts by using Avid on them :( and haven't done any since; but if either of our spotted flowers live long term, this IS a way that other cultivars could be induced to 'catch' freckles too. ;)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

That's very interesting. I've never done any grafting. Was tempted to purchase a kit, but never got around to it. Thanks.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Linda, I have been experiencing holes like that and found it was earwigs doing the damage. Neem doesn't work for them. You have to go out often and pull them out single handedly or spray them with malathion - your choice.

This has to be the buggiest year I have ever experienced. Mites are nothing compared to the aphids & earwigs this year. It is absolutely, without a doubt, UNREAL.
