Hi. I'm new as a subscriber.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Everyone,

I've been on the list as a member for a bit over a year, but finally got my act together to become a subscriber a few days ago.

My main interests in gardening are hostas (35 varieties now and counting), other shade plants, and my vegetable garden. There are links to pics on my family web site - http://www.magma.ca/~fredrkng/Ann/ann.html

I look forward to discussing the challenges of Canadian gardening (from cold winters to steamy summers - +34 today - to keeping things looking good in spite of violent thunder storms).

Welcome, Viola Ann, you will have fun, learn a lot and contribute much, I'm sure.

So nice to meet you Ann. I feel like I've done so in person after reading your wonderful website. :)

You have a lovely Hosta collection, and the photos of your garden show how much you like spending time there.

I hope you come to chat often on the Canadian Garden Forum, we can all use the expertise that other members can provide.

Welcome Ann. It's nice to have you aboard. What a wonderful hosta collection you have. I must confess though, that I am a reluctant hosta appreciator. I was one of those people who purchased my first hostas only because I had a spot to fill where nothing else would seem to grow. Now, four years and 7 different hosta varieties later, I am coming to appreciate them for their own beauty - in spite of myself :-) --Ginny, from Ontario's West Coast

Welcome ViolaAnn. Will go look at your website when there is time. Sounds deelightful. Do you grow iris or lilium?

Welcome to the Canadian Trading forum Viola Ann. :)

Welcome to Canadian Trading Ann. I'm sure you'll have a lot to contribute to our group. And when you need help, just holler!

I also am a "reluctant hosta appreciator", given a spot in my garden hidden by my A/C unit that gets no sun, but obviously needed something.... I planted three hostas there this spring, and was disappointed when I didn't see much new growth from any of them. But that was overcome when I saw that two of them are blooming already.

To Ginny in steamy Manitoba,

I hope it's not as steamy there as here. You'd wilt pretty fast today.

In regard to Iris, I have a few including a peachy one which I've had for a few years but which bloomed well only this year. I also have had trouble with Iris borer from time to time and since the season is so short for Iris here - usually going stright from winter to summer, I don't have many.

In regard to Lilium, I have several, none of particular distinction. We have the European red lily beatle which plays havic with them and I can't usually keep ahead of it; so I've reduced the number of lilies over the last few year. Other than the hostas, I have an eclectic mix which includes Echinacea - both pink and white and shasta daisies, Maltese Cross, several campanula including the biannual cup and saucer Canterbury Bell (never know where that is going to pop up and I have a great talent for weeding them out in their first year). Also have several Astilbe mixed with the Hostas.

Hi Ann
Welcome!
I too am fairly new. I had been hearing about Dave's from a friend for about a year and finally got the internet and joined. I am just getting into Hosta's and so enjoyed looking at your photos!

Hey Ann (annabell52)

Another Ann with no "e". We're kind of rare in Canada.
Hosta's will become an addicition. I've been know to spend hours
in the spring looking at web sites which have photos of the different
varieties. Hope you enjoy your new-found love of Hostas. ;-)

Ann ( who plays viola - hence ViolaAnn )

PS Being a violist, I have to have a few violas and Primroses (Primrose being an important 20th century violist) in my garden.

Welcome to the Canadian Gardening forum Ann. You have a beautiful collection of hostas and your garden looks lovely. How about sending some of the steamy heat out in our direction.

That would be ok, but she has to send it High over the interior mountains straight to the coast, 'cause here in the Interior, we have it hot enough, thank you. 30C today with clear ands sunny skys and the same forcasted for the rest of the week. :) Love it!

Hurrumph!! We've got rain and cool temperatures again this evening. The foxgloves were 8' tall this year. The sweet peas are going to be so tall pretty soon that I won't be able to pick the flowers. The slugs are having a field day and don't even bother to hide during the day.

Hi Viola Ann:

Welcome/Bienvenue (I work for the feds, can you guess (EG))

We seem to want to know the same things.

This is a great place to be, since everyone is friendly and so many of them know such a huge lot of stuff, it's amazing.

Hang out, and we'll get through this learning process.
