CLOSED: Wanted: Schizophrenic Canna or the Tri-Color Leaf Canna

Collins (90 min. dr, MS(Zone 8b)

Just saw there's a Schizophrenic (Cleopatra) Canna with 1/2 yellow leaf, 1/2 green leaf that blooms in two colors. Does anyone have this for trade &/or the tri-color canna (don't know its name) that's green, burgundy & red?

(Saw the Cleopatra canna in www.plantdelights.com catalogue)

Hi Miss,

I think the second one you are looking for might be Tropicana.

Don't be fooled by the picture. Cleopatra, for me, is not that showy. You often get green leaves with maybe a thin burgundy stripe down the center. The blooms can be all yellow with red dots or yellow with some red streaks or even all red. The picture shown at PD is extreme and honestly, I've never seen it on my plants. Here are some pics of my Cleopatra.

I guess it's pretty, but I was disappointed that I didn't get such bold leaf variation in mine. The blooms are pretty interesting though when they are bicolor.

Gee Whiz!
I was wanting one like in the hyperlink.
Sorry folks, if it isn't 1/2 green & 1/2 burgundy I'm not interested.
Thanks anyway,

I think the color mix is more a matter of pinching the all-green shoots (or pups) as they spring up. It takes a little effort to accentuate the color variations, and that mostly by selectively eliminating the shoots that are either all green or show insignificant color variation. All the same, this is not a strong genetic trait and would most likely disappear after a season or few if not kept on top of.

Butterfly Chaser,

You can get leaves that are showy. You just have to go through lots of them to find the one with the variegated leaves. I think I bought about 10 rhizomes and out of all of them only one had the variegation I was looking for. Here's a photo of mine. Don't mind the munchy leaves.

Your plant is really very lovely.

Flowerjunkie, some of my leaves do that, but not enough to really be impressive. My Red Stripe canna impresses me more, with dark leaves that are green and burgundy striped. And the leaves are just huge, probably the widest of any of my canna leaves. For bloom and foliage, I have my Red Wine cannas which are dwarfs. The blooms are watermelon pink, orchid shaped, and the foliage is almost purple. I still grow Cleopatra, but I'm losing interest in her. I think she's too much work. LOL

Here's a picture of my Red Stripe cannas:

Kaleem,

Thanks!

Butterflychaser,

You are right about Cleopatra being too much work. In order to keep her looking great I have to weed out all the green or almost green sports. But I'm constantly weeding out cannas away because I don't like having a huge clump of any canna in any bed.

I had red stripe at one time but lost it. Its a very pretty canna. As is Canna musifolia which I really like and don't usually have to weed it out but once every two years. I guess that the stalk is the most striking to me about this canna. Deep burgandy bamboo like stalks that reach to 6 foot complimented the banana green leaves with its one solid stripe down the middle. Here's her photo. Ignore the pesking vine that will meet with roundup this afternoon.

Flowerjunkie - I had to jump in here and ask you, what is that pesky vine? I have that one too! I can't figure out what it is.........

Collins (90 min. dr, MS(Zone 8b)

Thanks for the photos, you guys, but if it's that much trouble I don't think I want one. lol

Sue,

I have no idea what THAT vine is. It comes up every spring and send runners UNDER the grass. I've never see anything like it. Roundup only slows it down a bit..I never get rid of it.

Nice hearing from you,

Daisy

Nancy/Butterfly Chaser: love how, in the last photo, you matched the red stems to the woodwork around your windows! Super match!

flowerjunkie,

Does that vine have thorns? I can't tell exactly what the leaf shape
is so I can ID. But if it's got really sharp thorns on the stem, it's
called smilax. You've got to dig up the tuber on this to get rid of it,
and make sure you get ALL of it or it'll come back. Most times
they'll be segmented into many smaller tubers.

Hi Russ,

No thorns on this one. But I do have what I call "The Devil Ivy", it has big nasty thorns, the leaves are heart shape more or less. Hate that sucker and you are so right. I'm always digging it up. Most to the time IT wins.
