Some bug is attacking my Brug. They look like little red dots, and can be squished. Are these aphids or mites possibly? I've been spraying it with a spray that works on aphids, but I haven't had any luck. The leaves are yellowing very quickly, and the ones that are still green look like they have "powder" on them. By powder I mean that the leaf surface is chewed/torn off and letting light through, although not a full hole in the leaf. Any ideas how I can get rid of what ever they are?
This is my first Brug and I don't want to lose it!
Tiny red dot bugs?
Sounds like SPIDER MITES to me. Can you see little webs in the top growth?
Yes! I can see little webs. I never saw that till you said where to look. How do I get rid of them?
There are lots of different sprays, but in my heat (and I'm sure yours too) I've been using a strong blast from the hose, shooting from down to up so that I'm blasting the underside of the leaf. I have to do this every 3-4 days. I've also started using a systemic that is supposed to include mites but it's too early to see if it's going to help. Good luck, they're a real nucience.
aggiecorgie, one thing I'd also do it to make sure your brugs are will watered before you do anything with chemicals. I use chemicals and I know because I just about burned up my entire garden and I 'blew out the tops' of my brugs - I feel certain that if they had been well watered that would not have happened, and didn't happen to lots of them, so I'm pretty sure the chemical treatment, with not enough water was the cause. Did I say that twice, oooops, but don't forget or you will have a mess like I did, lol!! Good luck!!!
I'm in the same boat. I just noticed a few tiny red moving things on two of my brugs. Nighty nite mighty mites!

Don't you just hate mites???? !!!!!!!
Went out and sprayed neem on the two. I hope none of the others have them. I could only find about 10 mites total, but did find some taletell webs across the two leaves where they were. I've never sprayed brugs before so I hope spraying neem every few days for a few weeks will do the trick. Any advice?
I can't use Neem when my temps are over 80. Don't spray anything while the sun is shining on them, it will burn the leaves. Yellow leaves probably have been attacked by mites and may have eggs on them. I pull them off and remove them from the garden. I HATE mites.
Mine has more mites than I can count, so hand removal is not feasible. My brug is in a pot; should I move it to the shade then apply neem oil so not to burn the leaves?
Our temps have been on the cool side with high's in the 70's and lows in the 50's. I sprayed them when it almost completely dark so I hope they don't burn. I didn't see any yellowing leaves yet, but will keep an eye out for them. I sprayed the entire plant until each of the leaves were dripping wet. Luckily both are under 24" tall so don't have a mountain of leaves to spray yet.
I've been waiting until evening to spray with Neem. That or get up with the birds, early and do it. I can't Neem during the day - our temps are in the mid to high 80's and low 90's from about here through August. Neem does seem to work though.
Mites are so small that it isn't really possible to pick them off the leaves. Smash them, maybe, but they are like pin point size. Very hard to see. If you can't get them sprayed, just using water will help until you can.
The only reason I knew to look for mites were the characteristic webs they left. I could see a few little tiny red dots that were moving. Inside, I'm battling a much lighter colored mite that is tearing through my Alocasias right now. Poor things.
