bought one, left outside in full sun for one da (I forgot to protect it). now the round leaves at the base are completely brown. Is there any hope. It is in a put, in a shaded area and watered dayly but I can't tell if it's recuperating. any comments will be appreciated. thanks
staghorn fern
The bases of mine got brown last year, it's still alive.
good. then I will press on w/ my project to pot in a hanging basket. thanks, cala.
PS: you have mail
I put mine in one of those moss baskets, it sent babies out the bottom! I've moved mine to a shady spot under a tree. I didn't realize my patio got so much sun since it's got those wooden slat thingies(2x6 boards with 2x2 slats) on the top.
I got your mail, I don't think I was much help, lol.
I have one and it is hard to grow in my area because it is so dry. The friend I got it from told me to put mine in a tree knot filled with sphagnum moss and put it at the edge of my birdbath for the summer. The birds don't seem to mind it at all being in their water.... they even seem to like landing on the tree knot. Of course it will have to go inside for the winter. So far after a month mine is doing great... The first one I tried growing a few years back did not make it. Vossner, Good luck with yours.
thanks. they key is humidity. This freakishly dry hot summer is really playing a number on me! (have you heard me complaining about this elsewhere? if so, ignore me LOL)
Vossner,
Not sure if you are talking to me or Calalily or both..... Hope I am not intruding on your conversation... if so ignore me... but I think we all have the right to complain every now and then..... even when no one listens.......LOL
Summer, the forums are a free-for-all. I was talking to whoever will listen, especially if it is a complaint about the hot weather.
edited to add: where in the world is Concan?

Oooo, Concan is close to Garner State Park, isn't it? I've been thinking of that wonderfully exhilarating Frio River water!
Vossner:
I have been complaining about the hot dry weather also. It hasn't done any good though. We really need rain, but we are not alone. I just hope when the rain does start coming we don't get a flood.
Concan is a small town about 90 miles West of San Antonio. The Frio River goes though Concan. Garner State Park is about 10 miles North of Concan. It is a big vacation area. People come from all over to tube the Frio, camp, & cook out.... hike the hills, ride horses... etc. etc. etc.
maggiemoo: Sounds like you have been to Garner & the Frio. It is great isn't it?
The last three times I've gone to Brownsville to appraise a house(always in the same area of town too), I've gotten soaked in a thunderstorm. Did it rain at my house 20 miles away??????? Noooooooooo, not a drop! It has been above normal for all of June and July as far as heat, we are not used to these temps!
Susie, I've been meaning to ask you how long ago you moved to TX. Just curious (even those of us who have been here for 40 yrs are having trouble with this summer!)
Summer, yes, I've been to Garner several times. I love that water! What a great way to cool off, except you don't want to get out!
Once someone comes to Garner or the area they usually always want to come back. Many people you talk to come every year & have been coming for years & then end up moving here when they retire.
Maggie, I was born in TX but moved to Tennessee as a child. Then in the late 70's we started coming back and spending a lot of time mostly around El Paso and South Padre Island, plus my brother lived in Kilgore and we'd visit him. We vacationed here almost every winter and decided to move in 2003. We found a house in July of that year, but when I went with DH to look at it, I said "no way", then we had to find another house and that took till December 2003 to find, make offer and close.
Forgot to mention, we got RAIN!! an inch or more!! I didn't have to water plants when I got home. I didn't know what to do with all the extra time, I felt lost without a waterhose in my hand.
We got a small shower tonight.........still need much more... but at least I won't have to water tomorrow...
DH said we got l l/2 " rain. I'm surprised the rain gage didn't have dry rot. LOL
We are getting a lot of thunder today...... but no rain.... maybe it is on it's way..
silverfluter......rain gauge.... dry rot... that is too funny.......LOL
Dry rot is right! I am surprised it wasn't dust, don't they need rain to perserve them?
That is too funny.
It didn't crack when te rain hit it?
Sandy
No, it didn't. The wonders of plastic. We got 1 3/4 " yesterday. We happened to be at home at the time, too. It was so soothing to watch it. Moving water is so hypnotizing.
We got rain!!! Between yesterday & last night we got right at 4 inches..... Isn't that great!!! We sat out on the front porch and watched it. That is one of the most relaxing things I can think of doing is watching it rain. Hoping for more today...
I just planted some staghorn babies for a RUI. I hope I did this right. I had some wicker baskets and lined them with sphagnum moss and put a little rose dirt in the middle soaked it with water and added the fern and then put rocks on top to keep it in place. I mist it every day. Will this work?
