Christine,
Would you care to let us know how the secret trade is going to work?
Thanks!

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

Carol, what's the name of the plant in the photo you started the thread with?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Susan...it is the Green Jade...Strongylodon macrobotrys - the flower clusters hang down about 2'-3'...

Waterford, ON(Zone 6a)

Please add my name to the list.
Cindy

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

I'd like to participate in the swap, too.

I'd like to know more details on what is expected...number of cuttings to send, deadline for shipping, etc.

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

Carol, I like that. It's all my favorite colours! I will have to look it up in my "big book".

I only have the computer for a minute, so I'll update the list and respond to everyone's emails in the morning.

I will be soliciting advice to come up with a game plan. More info to follow.

G'nite all.

Christine

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Susan...August/Sept. time to start cuttings...will see if I can start you one. It is fragile but travels OK when young. I sent Mel one about 2 or 3 years ago and the first year it grew well...don't know what happened after that. Maybe she will come on to tell us. It IS totally breathtaking while in bloom....when not in bloom you approach it with a machete in hand!

Carol

Knoxville, TN

Yea, Carol sent me a Jade Vine after I lusted after one for a long time. It grew fablously each spring and summer on a arbor where the roots were shaded and leaves were left to reach for the sun. Naturally, I had to take it down in the fall and bring it into the greenhouse for the winter and it simply did not like being touched or moved and I never could bloom it. Had I left it in the greenhouse year round, I would have had better luck blooming it. Sadly, I tried rooting cuttings and growing it in hanging baskets and ended up loosing it. I tend to move plants around too much for this very special and spectacular plant. I have read others report they bloomed their Jade Vines in hanging baskets. It definately needs plenty of space to sprawl without being moved.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Carol it definitely is a wowzer of a vine!
:) Donna

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

I didn't forget, count me in!!!
-Heather

Okay, rules and expectations.

A hoya cutting, big enough to start a nice plant, is to be sent by each participant..

If you also want to send more than one hoya cutting, plant hangers, cuttings of other plants, iPods (LOL), seeds, homemade cookies, or whatever, that's entirely up to you. Let your imagination be your guide, and by all means, lets have fun with this!

While "registration" officially closes at noon, your time, on Friday, I'm going away for the weekend. I'll take all info with me and work out the trade schedule while I'm away, and let everyone know who they're sending to either Sunday or Monday.

Any questions or suggestions are welcome! This is the first time I've done anything like this, so please be paient with me and don't take anything I've written above to be "cast in stone".

Christine

Edited to say: Please do not post what you plan to send, so it can stay a Secret Trade.

Sounds great, Christine. :)

Knoxville, TN

Christine, Sounds more like you have done this before.

It will be a ton of fun and a great way for all to get to know each other!

It would be great if some of the newer collectors could post a wish list. That way, if we happen to have something our secret trader really wants, we could share it.

Mel

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Mel, I don't know if you should have said that about a wish list. Mine would be all the neat leaved ones you have....lol. I'll work on my wish list.
:) Donna

No, Mel, I haven't done this before, but I took sage advice from someone with experience, and I am a good organizer. (Already have a binder set up, with names on tabs and copies of emails behind each person's tab. Okay, okay, so I'm a little bit anal retentive...oh, okay, so I'm a lot anal retentive...lol.)

I think that a wish list is a good idea for everyone, not just the newbies. But, everyone should keep in mind that you may not get exactly what you want!

Christine

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Christine, you are a doll!!! Thanks for your hard work! Me?...it would have all been on little scraps of paper all over my desk!!! LOL

Carol

Leesburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Is this for trading Hoyas only?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

I would like to participate, but I don't have any very unusual hoyas, just a couple of fairly common ones....would there be anyway to confirm that I would be sending someone something they don't already have?
Mary Ev.

Yes BogweedBuck - but if you have something in addition to hoyas that you want to share, that would be nice too.

Abbotsford, BC(Zone 8a)

Hi Christine...

If a person would post a wish list, should we email it to you? and post what we plan to send?....As Mel said, you are definately an old pro at organization...lol

As MaryEv says, I dont have anything out of the ordinary in hoyas either or not big enough to send many cuttings....Hope there is something somebody wants that is common and won't be disappointed......

Sandy

Sandy, I'm divided on the wish list issue. What do others think we should do? I'm leaning towards a Wish List Thread so this one doesn't get too cluttered (oops, there I go again...lol).

Do not post what you plan to send, how could it stay a secret that way?

How can anybody be disappointed when we're getting hoya cuttings? If you don't want them, trade with somebody else who you know has something you want.

If we make further decisions regarding the rules for the Secret Trade, I'll add them to my original rules post above (July 12, 10:16 a.m.)

Christine

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

I agree with Carol and Christine, no wish list simplifies the whole thing. If we get a duplicate, pass it on in another trade to someone you want to suprise (or get addicted to Hoyas!). Whoever gets Awanda (HEY! Where IS Awanda?) or Carol is going to need to be creative! As it was said, we can always include something else that's "neat" if we only have a few Hoyas to choose from. That makes it fun.....you never know what will come!

K

Thanks Karen.

Yes, Where Is AWANDA???????

Christine

Abbotsford, BC(Zone 8a)

Sounds good to me Christine.....cant mess with the Coordinator! :)...secrets are more fun that way anyway.....

Sandy

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Wanted to add, that if anyone wants to know if the person they have been designated with has any particular "wants", they could always check their Trade List. :)

Ah, yes, but only if said inended recipient has a trade list ....
