H. leytensis??

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Is Hoya leytensis an 'accurate' name, or is it a synonym for another?

I bought a plant I believed to be a Hoya at HD about a year or so ago....haven't been able to identify it, but just found a website that has an almost identical plant pictured as H. leytensis.

Here's a link to their photo:

Any ideas?
TIA!

From what I understand, H. leytensis IS an accurate name...but since it is a small leafed hoya, it is a 'tag' often over used when lacking the correct name. How big are the leaves on yours? It's hard to tell from the picture.

The website that I copied the link from states that a yogurt carton was used for size comparison, if that helps, Carol??

My plant is at home and I'm not, but I'd say the leaves are about 3/4" long and 1/2" wide.

I'll try to find our camera tonight and get a photo of mine.

Thanks for looking!

From the growth habit and the leaves...it could be a couple of things....are the leaves kinda fleshy?? See if it matches one coming in your box....wink wink nudge nudge!!!!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

lol! OK...I'll check that out!

I think it's a hoya...they're not 'especially' fleshy, and of course newer leaves are 'fleshier' than the older ones.

I'm resigning myself to get a photo of my plant tonight, and I'll try to put a coin or something in the photo for comparison.

No blooms, yet, so no help in that aspect.

It looks a bit like the plant being sold by Exotic Angel.
If it is, the closest name that I recall...(going only on memory) would be H. aff. picta. I sure cannot swear to it tho!!!!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Mine is, indeed, an EA plant, Mel.

But.....I've looked at a lot of picta photos, and none matched very closely.

Does anyone here have a photo (close-up, preferably) of H. aff. picta?

Nan, here's Ravenlocks' picture of a picta. - http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/58687/

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Thanks! (duh!...never thought of checking the PF!)

That *could very well* be it, but I've seen other photos of pictas that have more rounded leaves....then again, ravenlocks' plant looks as though it may have some variable leaf growth?

It sure is close.....

Now, do leytensis and this picta (or is this one aff. picta?) have leaves that look similar?

I'll continue to check every so often for blooms...guess that's my only surefire bet on an ID.

You can see some leaves in this link...not clearly, but there. Yes, I agree with Mel...looks like that plant...but photos of leaves can be wierd. My H. aff picta has 2 or three different looking leaves...so much depends on the clone and the environment.

Even the name 'picta' is in question...that's why it is called H. aff. picta and it is important to keep the 'aff' in the name....shortening it changes the hoya!!

Dang! I took a few photos last night, brought the camera and power cord to work w/me, and realized I'd forgotten the cable to connect to the computer!!!

I'll get it posted tomorrow.

Well...I guess I lied....I can't find that stupid cable! Still looking......

I'm not real talented with the camera, and my Macro lens doesn't work....but I think they turned out OK.

Nan, are your leaves fuzzy at all?

What I find funny about this, is that I have the same curtains...lol...don't let your hoya near it!!

Christine

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

No, Christine...they don't seem to be fuzzy at all. Quite stiff/leathery, but new leaves are quite supple.

About the curtains....lol!!....I have this one and another (my Grandmother's original) near this curtain...and I know your pain!
Grow right through it, don't they?!

I try to turn the plant every couple of days to avoid this now that it's happened several times!

Pretty Plant Nan, no matter what it is! Way to go! has it ever bloomed?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Nan....did it match one in your box?

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

No Carol....not even close!

SCshopgirl...Thanks! No it has never bloomed, despite being very healthy a relatively carefree plant.
I check as often as I can for any signs of either a 'hoya-like' or 'dischidia-like' bloom.....and no signs as of yet.
I'll be right on top of that if it *does* bloom, and get a photo.

Anyone have any ideas?
It sure looks a lot like that photo of H. leytensis....then again it probably looks like several plants out there!

Knoxville, TN

Nan,
Awhile back many of us collected a Exotic Angel plant that looks very similar to the one you have posted.
Some bloomed it and sent flowers to Chris Burton.
As I recall, she sustected it might be H. leytensis at first then settled later on calling it H. aff. picta. (Not confirmed, rather an educated guess)
Obviously I cannot say yours is the same plant, but, I have not heard of Exotic Angel distributing any other look alikes. I would say it is likely you have that plant.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Thank you, Mel....I think that's what I'll call it, (it is an EA plant) with a ? at the end, until I hear differently.

If it ever blooms (lol!) I'll take a photo and hopefully someone will recognize it.

Thanks for looking, everyone!

Cute hoya no matter what!
