The butterflies are finally at my garden!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm sure they have been here for a while, but I have finally gotten to see them on a regular basis. I have seen a Monarch, swallowtails, a tiger swallowtail, hummingbird moths, hummingbirds, and lots of little yellow, white and brown butterflies. Today I got a chance to take a couple of pictures. And aI have a couple from last year. Keep in mind I am not very good with the camera. Thank goodness for digital, so I can hit the delete key. :)

Lovely pics and lovely butterflies (and sphinx moth :-). I especially like the one in #3! I've never seen that one before. Do you know what it is?

Beautiful!

I can't catch any still enough to take pics of....but I definitely haven't seen any this fantastic.

Julie,

I think it might be a zebra swallowtail? I really don't know. I need to do some research. I just thought it was pretty. :)

Peggy, that #3 is a Zebra Swallowtail! You are SO lucky!! We do not have them where I am, and I still think they are not that common. I don't think I've ever seen a picture online from someone's garden. I don't ever remember anyone raising them either. They use Pawpaw's as their host plant. Keep your eye out for this one!

oops, I was so excited to see the ZST, I forgot to say how beautiful all of the others were too!! :)

Wow... I'm glad I got a picture of it then. I didn't realize they were so hard to see. I don't have a Paw Paw, but there are woods across the street from us, so maybe there's some in there. How exciting!

And thanks...

LOVED the pic of the Zebra Swallowtail and the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. The other shots are beautiful also but I have never seen a Zebra SWT in the wild and even the Tigers are rare here. Your Cone flowers are beautiful. Wish I could grow them here. I have tried twice with dismal failure both times. I think it is the high heat and humidity.

I'm glad I got a pic of the Zebra. It was co-operating well. They don't always do that. Sometimes I'm chasing them around bushes and stuff - the neighbors probably think I'm a lunatic. I have lots of cone flowers, 10 butterfly bushes, joe pye weed, hibiscus, and 10 milkweeds. And lots of fill in plants. If it says hummingbird or butterfly, I snag it and drop it in there. Its not tidy, but i love it any way.
I just wish I had more room to work with....

Oh RedMaggie, just look at all that grass! You must get rid of some of it! That's what I'm doing. lol You have some great butterfly plants, so hopefully you'll see more of these! Ed and I were very excited!

lol Konkrete.... I would definitely do that, but its my dad's yard! My daughter and I moved in with him when my mom died.... I started with one row, then a the next year a second, and this year a third.... and so on and so on.... (I hope) I keep hoping if I do it gradually, he won't notice. I've tried telling him I'm trying to save him from mowing so much grass....

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Exactly! Maybe you'll get him all interested too. Just add a little to the side, a little to the front, and so on and he'll never notice. lol
