Lots of small buds that seems to stay the same size

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I don't know what kind of brug this is. There's quite a few bugs on this brug, but I don't see them getting any bigger. More grow and stop at the same length. Any ideas?

Georg Preissel's book, Brugmansia and Datura, says buds will develop until they reach a certain size then stop. When a threshhold is reached, they will resume their development to produce a flush of blooms.

I'll have to do some investigations into which types of brugs bloom in flushes.

Hi Emily..
Your doing an excellent job of growing brugs for some one who just started back in May....
If this is one of the cuttings I sent you it could possibly be Insignis Pink or a Frosty Pink. I just love those little fat stubby buds....LOL

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Hi Kin,
The two you gave me are growing nicely, but no 'Y's yet. Since then I've purchased about 20 more brugs. I have a little brug forest outside. My largest is 4 ft high and about 3 ft wide. You're right. They are growing like crazy right now.

I can't wait for all of those stubby buds to bloom!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

I have a creamsickle that has very small buds, and another creamsickle that hase larger ones. The ones with the larger ones gets much much more sun, however, it also has to suffer the elements of much more wind and sometimes rain. I'm going to just note the difference between the two to better help me in the future.

Your stubbies aren't that small. I've seen much smaller and slower progressed.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

My "stubby" brug gets full sun pretty much all throughout the day, except for light shade throughout the afternoon. When I got most of my brugs, I was a dumb dumb for not marking which type they were so now it will be a nice surprise.

How does creamsickle do for you? I've heard that one can be a tricky one to grow.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

How long have they been this size? Mine seem only to slow down when the temps are cool. I notice if it is hot, they open fast. Boy, that would drive me nuts for so many buds to just sit there esp if I hadn't seen it bloom before.

Please post a picture when it opens. It is going to be gorgeous with so many at once.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Lots of buds going there, please post a photo when they open.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You know I was reading up on Versicolors and it said that the buds on versis stop growing till all the buds are the same size, then they will open all at once. How neat is that!

Maybe you have a Versi!

Emily, Here is one that has those fat stubby buds. It seems they have been this size for the past week now. If the weather person is correct..LOL Ha he Ha ha... The weather is gonna get warmer this week.... We will see if it really happens or not.
If it does warm up then they should start showing some activity!

WOW Kin, sure is a pretty scene there. I see you have the new geraniums. I was looking at some last week. I fell in love with some of them. I may have to get me a few. So tell me, are they hard to grow? I hate the green geraniums, mine always look messy after a year or 2.

Thanks Kell!
The geraniums are really easy to grow. They like a lot of sun and just a little care. I get them for the foliage. Don't care much for the flowers. The foliage really brightens up a spot. I sent out a bunch of them to members here at Dave's that couldn't find them back east. I have some around a banana that looks good with them.
Here is a pic. of some close up

I resisted that day but now I might have to go back and get some. Here are some, not all, of the ones I saw. So pretty!!

Sorry- Emily for the temporary HighJacking of your thread.
Those are pretty Kell. You can beat that color & pattern in them thar leaves.

Emily, the Creamsickle has been one of my easier plants to grow, along with Whiskers. The one I'm having the most problem with is the Herrenhauser Garten, and from what I've learned on these threads, that is not uncommon.

Karrie, I have been having problems with my HG also. It's been very slow getting started. The leaves are also slightly yellow and not as robust as my others brugs. I have 4 cuttings that I started and one out of the four looks ok. If they don't shape up very soon they are compost...

That describes what's going on with mine to a T, Kin. On a Brugmansia site, I saw that it is best grown in a conservatory. Picky little thing. I might donate it to Manito's Park's conservatory. Maybe it will be happier there.

Thanks Karrie, I also knew they were picky and I took the challenge...LOL Of course our weather has been on the cool side here and that could have something to do with it.
It couldn't have anything to do with how I raise them now could it??? LOL
That's a great idea donating to the conservatory.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I don't mind if you hyjack the thread at all.

I, too, have heard that HG is a tough one to grow. I've also heard the same about Peaches and Cream.

The weather has been cool and I've noticed other brugs have been rather slow about blooming. Supposed to be in the mid 80's here next week instead of the low 70's with rain. I bet it's going to be a bloomfest here when it does warm up. Look at all these buds on CG.

Emily, that is going to be beeeeautiful!

Emily, Here is the follow up picture to the fat stubbie buds I posted. The warm weather did hit us hard, Huh!!! Hope you are making it through the Heat. Are you watering as much as I am???? LOL

Kin, your brug is beautiful. Which kind is that? Btw, I am a watering machine. 2x a day for the big ones and 1x a day for everyone else until it cools down. I've had to move some into shadier areas after the leaves looked like they were becoming bleached.

Here's what my brug looks like so far. About 1/2 of the blooms are open with many others just a couple days away.I think this is frosty pink. I've moved it to an area that gets only morning sun so the blooms don't burn.

Emily, what a nice flush. So they did all open up at once. Makes for a much more imprerssive display.

Kin, again to die for. So lush! I am in love with the shape of those blooms. Which one is this?

I have one like yours from my first batch of seedlings. It is Kyle's seed. I call it headlights; it is huge.

Pretty blooms Emily.

It's going sort of the opposite here. We've had heat index figures in the high nineties/low hundreds for several weeks now, and I find I've got hundreds of buds in suspended animation; some are falling unopened rather than blooming, but most are just waiting.
Maybe poor temps either way cause them to hesitate, trying to wait for the most opprotune time to get pollinated? (They probably don't trust us to be there at the right moment with our paint brushes and q-tips!)

Sorry I have been absent for a couple of days. Long hrs. of work and then home toooo Water.. Water... Water...!!
They sure do require the water when we get our hot stretch of weather.
Emily & Kell, I'm only certain I almost threw this one out last year. LOL I got a cutting from someone in TX and can't remember. It only had a couple of blooms last year and were really not much to look at. The only reason I saved it was it grew so well and was healthy. I guess I did right on this one....LOL It must be a suaveolens hybrid don't you think.
Lagata2, the weather sure does play an influence on the brugs. So correct. Just toooo funny about the trust in us with our paintbrushes and Q-tips....LOL

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I got this one from an ebay auction and silly me never put a tag in the pot. The little guy you gave me, Kin, is still growing a lot but hasn't Y'd yet. I think I had it in an area with too much sun as the leaves were becoming bleached and have now moved it so it gets shade in the afternoons. I'll post a pic of that little guy this weekend.
