New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

I have been looking around for Upright elephant ear but couldn't find. Do you know where can I find one for good price?? I want to add it to my tropical garden.

Here's the photo of plant that I am looking for.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

The larger Upright's should be fairly easy to find down there.

I'm sure come morning ely or one of the other Southern EE'ers can set you on the right track.

We picked up A. odora and A. macro at Lowes of all places.

Mini..I have an upright that I can send you in the fall...it's in the ground now but making lots of babies.
Unfortunately it does not look like the one in the 2nd pic...that is beautiful!

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Down here, I went to places and searched... not find.. but I find many of Black Magic, and other kind of EE. I only want a upright EE. But I will try my best to search around until I find one.

Yes that 2nd pix. it is so huge. Beautiful!

Livermore, CA

I think I got mine from Stoke's Tropicals. They get to be a good 8 or so feet in my zone.

Tricia, what type are you looking for? Do you know the name? I might be able to share a few come fall.

I agree ely might be able to tell you the names of the ones in the pics but last I heard from him, he was wrestling Dennis to save his plants. :(

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

All I know the name is Upright Gaint EE.

Today I went to two of Lowes and Home Depot.. No luck.. but found me a piece of Black Magic EE rooting hanging from pot from local Lowes.. I brought it home with a banana called Musa sp. I bought. LOL

The Black Magic EE cost $9.89 each so I got the piece that doesn't cost me a penny! Hope it will stay live and grow.

here's the piece of Magic black EE, it have seveal roots on the elbow. :o)

Okay. the last.. at Home depot.. somehow I was searching for the Upright EE and my young DD said Mom, Look at those bananas for $4.97 each. I said no way..I went and looked it.. It's Cavandish banana... so I got two of them. It's pretty. It only two left so I got both! :o)

I am not sure if I should plant two in ground or in large pot and put it around in my tropical garden.. I don't know how tall they will grow. On the other paper, it said Assorted foliage, on the pot, the piece paper sticker said Canandish banana. I am sure it's not red banana.

Mini, search posts by Eclipse. He posted one of the giants he is growing from tissue culture. I think you are looking for Borneo Giant.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Badseed. I emailed to Eclipse and asked for help id.

Now I am going walk out and go work in tropical garden. It's nice day and light wind.. come and help me! lol

M_S,
That should be more than enough plant to get a nice 'Black Magic' started.
Many times I've started w/ far less.

Today I went around local nurseries for upright EE.. No luck but bought me two of hostas.. I think I m getting addicted to hostas.. LOL

Foley, AL

first one that could be calidora, Odora,

The second one must have been taken around the EQ. but it also makes no since to me.

there are some that have not been introduced into the states, but it could be BG. but if it was an alocasia, I would think that it would have to have a stalk for a plant that big.

I would suggest starting out with plumbae, odora, macrorrhiza, california, portora. before you get something a step above those might get you mad at alocasias.I have odora and california, you are more than welcome to pay for postage if you want them.

The second one I always assumed was jacked up in Photoshop.

ely, I like your suggestions on all but plumbae for a novice.
Here it can be a bit temperamental coming back in the Spring/Summer.
Every year I think I've lost it and then it sneaks in.
Mine is just now starting to pop up.

Does yours go dormant?

I LOVE A. odora.
We have 4 spathes up already.
It outstrips macro in growth by far.

I didn't want to come out and say that pic was a fake, but to me I would think so. It just doesn't seem right. my plumbae comes up in june for me, so it is late but hardy here. I would say to take on plumbae after all of the common green ones and let that is a step above, them but below sarian or tigrina etc. but I would think in zone 9 out of the pot in the ground and the humidity LA has it would come up sooner, and have less of a chance of getting too wet. It is also to me one of the alocasias that is best to recover from being over watered.

Up here we keep the plumbae pot in a saucer and water deeply when the soil looks dry on top.
They get a beautiful metalic sheen that makes them one of my favs.
That we only get them for such a short season really makes you appreciate them all the more.

Ric

Foley, AL

yeah... have you tried putting them in a hot house to see if they want come up earlier?

ely

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Yes but it doesn't seem to help much.
This year I'll work w/ them a bit more.

Ric

Foley, AL

I saw some about 2 months ago in a hot house in P'cola and wich is just 30 minutes east of me and theres were a pretty good size... It just made me wonder if ground heat had something to do with it....

ely

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

That may well be the problem.
I'll try them on my Caladium mats next Spring.
