I was wondering are brugmansia allelopathic. I have a peach coloured one that I planted violas under thinking that the yellow and purple flowers would play nicely against the brug, but for some reason after a few weeks of doing great they were snuffed. So thinking that I needed a hardier flower I used Linium perrenii and the red flowers came up and blossomed but now they look like [deleted]. The Guara lindheimerii, Salvia leucantha, Salvia greggii, Salvia tricolour, and Lavadula spicata are O.K. but everything in a 3' circle of my brug joins the choir invisible. So I'm thinking that like Juglans nigra, something is inhibiting the growth of those plants near the roots of the brug. Any comments? Thanx-Garth

Are Brugs allelopathic??
So in other words they do not play nicely with others!!! LOL!! Very interesting. I have practically all of mine in pots or in brug beds where they are the only stars. I do have a several in my front bed. One has a rose right up to it. It is huge. So it is letting that live. I have roses around my other one too and a hedge right in front of it. All growing well together.
My brug pots have annuals in with them. They all do great. In fact my colored chard in with my Sexy Lady is going nuts.
So I would say by my limited experience, mine are all well behaved.
Mine play well with others too. I have several that have huge jasmine vines growing up thru their branches and I'm sure the roots are totally intertwined by now. I used to grow most of mine in pots and I always stuck other stuff in with them. The only time I had trouble was when the water and/or fertilize requirements didn't match.
Violas don't do well when it gets hot, so maybe that's why they died.
Maybe your brugs are taking too much water away from the other plants, or maybe they shade too much.
I have violas and pansies all over my yard in full bloom and the heat isn't hurting them at all. I didn't even consider the water thing. I use sprinklers, mostly and every other week I flood all the beds. I'm thinking of either dianthus or lobelia is what I'll try next since they seem to do very well for me. Thanks for the info.
I'm trying nicotianna right now and they don't seem to be too pleased. I wonder if they resent all of the water the brugs get.
I've got nicotiana in ground with some brugs. First year for them and from the amount of seed those pods have I'll probably have them forever. Otherwise, they've grown and bloomed no problem.
You might want to investigate what types of plants grow well with Tomatoes since they are in the same family. I know they say planting tomatoes near roses helps reduce teh black fungus or mold or whatever that is that roses get
I have never heard that before Laura. Very interesting. I have 2 roses this year that keep getting powdery mildew. Makes me nuts. I have been too busy to spray. Of coruse I have no room for a tomato plant so forget that idea until I move. LOL
Move?? Are you getting a farm?? You could grow acres of brugs.
