San Antonio Area Info Needed

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I am sort of "mentoring" a new to gardening 21 year old girl through the email (will definitely try to get her to join Dave's garden!) who needs a good garden center to buy some fall transplants for tomatoes and peppers, etc. We gotta get these young people into gardening! Also good links to fall vegetable planting schedule. Do our friends at the Aggie site have one for the San Antonio area? I've seen east Texas, etc...I figure you folks are the best experts for your area!
Thanks ever so much!

Debbie, all the local nurseries will have tomato, pepper and eggplant seedlings for setting out now and into August. For tomatoes, the extension service is recommending Amelia, Celebrity, Heatwave, Solar Fire, Sun Pride and Tomato444 (I haven't grown any of these, so can't comment on results.) We have quite a few very good nurseries; my favorite is Rainbow Gardens (3 locations.)

Debbie, I meant to ask: what fall vegetables does your young protege want to grow? And how much space will she be using? Any containers? One sure fire success I always recommend is Swiss chard.

I think she just wants vegetables and isn't far enough into the "gardening addiction" to realize what will grow down here and when. I gave her your advice about the nursery and found her a vegetable fall planting guide from the county extension service there. She did get out a clear a large area by digging out the grass in this weather....gotta admire her determination!
:) Debbie
