My three garden cats had been happily using their basement-window catdoor for a couple of years when I decided it was time to spruce up the backside of the house. I’ve no idea what possessed me to design this porch for them—my indulgent helpmate built it in a weekend out of scraps in our basement. The roof boasts real shingles, donated from a friend. I hope that the flower bed will fill out next year to better frame the porch. The cats did not seem to mind the change, and old arthritic Oscar (pictured here watching the rain) definitely appreciates the steps. The cats now have a nicer porch than we do (all we have is a concrete stoop)!
It’s good to be a cat around here—once inside the catdoor, they find themselves on a special kitty platform above the washing machine. They can jump down onto the basement floor from the washer, or follow the narrow kitty walkway built along the wall to the landing that leads to the kitchen.
What other kinds of indoor or outdoor structures have people built for their cats? I now have ideas about a tree house with a winding staircase up the trunk. Post your cathouse pictures here!
