Passiflora guestion?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

This is my first year w/ Passion vine.

Are the fruits from all edible of just certain ones?

Here's a shot of my Passiflora morifolia from a few days ago.
At least that was the ID I was given.
I'm getting 1-3 blooms open every day.
There are aready a dozen or so fruits hanging.

How long before they ripen?

ok...Edible???, or PALATABLE???lol...

They may be mostly edible, but few are palatable...lol...I had hubby experiment with a morifolia fruit a few years ago(great bloomer, by the way!)...he scrunched up his face and immediately spit it out, lol...
I asked what it tasted like, and he said "sour dirt", lol...

They can really stain your hands, too! I collected seeds from all my fruits, and my hands were purple stained for several days afterward...

There are a very few pf that have poisonous fruit--but some do.
Here is a shot of ripe morifolia fruit. I did not eat it.
I think you might have a chance with incarnata. The fruit is good and I think it is hardy to zone5. The important thing about getting good passionfruit is having enough days of heat to ripen the fruit. Some of the foetidaes are pretty good and the fruit is small and ripens quickly.

lol, I'd eat a rotten egg first......well, maybe not, but you get the idea. Morifolia I believe is listed as edible, but not desirable. It tastes terrible.

Yeah first edible then palatable was the way I should have phrased the opening question.

Thanks for the info.

Reminds me of my mushroom hunting teacher.
I asked which 'srooms were edible.
She said "Oh, You can eat all of them.......Once"

Ric-
Another mushroom saying is:
"Spouses are like mushrooms...you don't know if you've gotten a bad one, until it is too late"...lol...

Isn't Morifolia the 1 with tiny flowers and enormous leaves? I think I had this 1 last summer and it was so huge and all of the flowers were always hidden behind leaves so You'd never see them unless you dug in.
I ended up killing this 1 off as it was entirely too huge for such small flowers. Plus it was choking out everything that it could reach!

Yes that would be it JDL.

I'm growing it for a friend who lost her home.
It was one of her plants.

It does make you search for the flower but sometimes I like a subtle surprise.
Also makes a GREAT instant privacy wall for sure! lol

I just found a fascinating site for all plants but I found really cool passion flower info when I stumbled across it. It's a Govt. USDA site to boot.
http://plants.usda.gov/cgi_bin/topics.cgi?earl=plant_profile.cgi&symbol=PAME2
It maybe old news to many of you, I found it very informative, it also listed the edible passion flowers on 1 of the pages in there.
