There was red ones:
3 kinds of dragonflies
Nice shots, Blooms!
Ditto! I have never seen a red one, yet. I have seen more in my yard this year, but they've been zooming back and forth too much for me to take any pics yet. That's a good thing tho, they must be eating mosquitoes!

It took a while of sitting very still, deciding which grass stem was getting the action, and many 'not quite' shots... it was all fun... watching them dash around the ponds edge and out over the water. GardenWife got some good shots too.
Fantastic shots Blooms :-) Love those blue & white ones.
yeah, angele, never saw that kind before that day. A treat to get a clear shot of each of the specimens.
Great shots! I love dragonflies! :-)
Hi Julie, nice to see ya, I been gone. back now.
Paige, do you have a water feature that brings them to your garden?
I have a birdbath and this season I've had a fountain, but they've been coming for a few years. No one around has a pond in their yard either. The only big source of water I know of is a pond about a mile away.
Have seen a coppery colored one on a walk but didn't realize it was a dragonfly till I saw your pictures. Someone posted a picture with one that landed on their nose and it struck me as really funny because one had landed on my nose just a couple days before. I was wondering 'what's up with the dragonflies and noses?'
Does your nose look like a stick?
LOL, no come back on that one
Ha, ha,ha! Gotcha. ;)
Wonderful pictures of some beautiful creatures. A good book to help identify them is "Dragonflies through Binoculars--A Field Guide to Dragonflies of North America" by Sidney W. Dunkle. They often return to the same hunting perches over and over. So if you can find one on a perch just hang around there for a while and you can get a 2nd or 3rd shot. They are very photogenic.
'S how I did it. figured out which piece a grass was real popular and then hold real still
A naturalist doing what comes natural. :-)
Nice shots, love dragonflys. When I was a kid my grandmother used to tell me that they were called sewing bugs and if I didn't behave they would sew my mouth shut. I was afraid of them then but not now. I appreciate their uniqueness and beauty.
Ed, yours looks absolutely metallic! :-) I've got bits of water all over my garden....and gardens around me with little koi ponds....yet I've only seen one dragonfly in my garden this year so far. I'm just amazed at all the dragonfly posts this week.

Ed, Now that's a close up. Ya can see him smilin' for the camera. What kinda camera you got? They're such neat critters.
Olympus D-540zoom, 3.2 megapixel-A point and shoot beginner's camera but sometimes you can get decent Macro shots.
Amazing photos..
hemlady: that is called motivating with a stick; I prefer motivation with sweet esp. if I am on the receiving end LOL.
a headstand... a definite show off and great, detailed pic... they're magic arent they?
They sure are magic and there seems to be so many different kinds.
Oooooh, what beautiful colors. Great pics!!!!
Outstanding photos, Ed!
Wow, ya can sure tell the girls from the boys. These are terrific macro shots or close up shots or whatever... /;-)~
Ohhhhh, I just love these pictures!! I can not believe the colors in these strange creatures! I'm inspired to sit outside and wait again.
