Holding Up In This Heat?

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I am home today and just took these. I have to water heavily from now through the end of the season to keep everything alive. What still looks good for you today?

This is first year for this bed. It is one of the "street" or "sidewalk" beds I made in the fall. It gets full sun for about 3 hours in the late afternoon.

This gets more sun than I would like since I had a couple of limbs trimmed.

These are all taken in the front yard as you can probably tell.

Terrie pix #6 belongs in the color echos thread. Combo is beautiful. coleus name?
I just can't believe NOBODY is complaining about the heat. My lantana is wilting despite daily watering. You know that's hot!

Nery, we are having a cool front today -- only 91 degrees. :-) But it is SO humid!!

There is a color echos thread? And I don't know the name of the coleus. Unless you buy a big pot of coleus around here, most times you do not see a name on the little 3 inch pots. I buy the small ones in the spring because they are almost fail free in my gardens.

Is you lantana in the ground? I have some in a basket attached to my fence and if I don't water it twice a day now, it will be gone. Unbelievable!

Here are a few pics from back yard today.

And this one was taken two days ago but sun was too bright to get a picture of it today.

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/525738 Oh yeah, your pix definitely belong there. Great thread. I would belong there if theyn were talking about the color brown--brown lantana paired with even browner coneflowers, LOL.

Is your lantana espaliered? oh never mind, I reread your posting and see they are in baskets hanging on fence. Very nice! and yes, mine are inground.

Beautiful! Absolutely gorgeous. About the only thing flourishing here is passionflower. The vines are running rampant and blooming profusely, and haven't been watered at all.

It IS hot! There is so much more I need to do out there but I wilt as much or more than the plants do.

Thanks, Yuska! I tried passionflower vine three years ago. It was gorgeous but completely took over EVERYTHING and I pulled it down. I am still pulling up babies even now.

Terrie, are you trying to start a revolt?! I have been making a list of all the casualties, and here you go, showing pictures of a beautiful, lush garden! How do you do it? Please come down here and show me how!!!

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL Thanks, Maggie (I think)! You don't think I would show you pictures of my sunburned, wilted plants now do you? Besides, if you'll pay the water bill, I'll come down there and water yours as much as I have to water mine. :-)

I was talking to someone in Austin earlier today, at work. She gave me a great idea. I think I'll put a couple of buckets in the shower with me to save some of the water, then use that to water plants! Then I'll fix my washer to drain into buckets, and use that "gray" water, also! (Of course, you have to use the right soaps so as not to kill the plants.)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I think someone else mentioned saving water like that. Was it Rikerbear?

Conroe, TX(Zone 9a)

I know there are a lot of people on country lots who irrigate their yards with gray water. It makes a whole lot of sense, and would lessen the strain on the public water systems (saving that water for things like putting fires out.)

trunnels, Dutch Gardens ( a subsidiary of Gardeners Supply) has a photo contest running with an entry deadline of July 15. Prizes are gift certificates of $75 in 3 categories and a grand prize of $500. Your pictures are certainly of a caliber to win! http://tinyurl.com/cevul Yuska

Oh, that's so sweet of you to say, Yuska. But keep looking around Dave's -- you'll see thousands of garden pictures that make mine look ghetto! LOL

(But of course, I'll check it out.) :-)

Hi everyone! Just thought I'd rub it in...I'm in Seattle this week visiting my daughter, the temp has been in the high 70's. We have been doing lots of planting. I've been taking my granddaughter on walks in the neighborhood and checking out the gardens. We even found a community garden that was very interesting, a little of everything there. There are so many plants that I don't recognize. I'd like to bring some home with me. They probably wouldn't make it in the Texas heat. I hope my DH is watering my plants, he said he would. If he doesn't, I'll have plenty to add to my compost pile!

Shirley, while you're in Seattle, hop aboard the steamship or a ferry and go to Victoria, British Columbia, to visit Buchart Gardens. It's a marvelous, fascinating place! Your cousin, Yuska

Shirley, enjoy some of that grand weather for us! And give a wave towards Tacoma, to my sister.

I spoke too soon. It has rained most of the day and I actually got a little chilled. Yuska, we did take that trip a few years ago to Victoria and it was beautiful. We bought more plants today, still haven't planted what we had. It's always more fun to buy than plant! I just have to get it done by Sun. as I head back to Texas on Mon. My DH said that we had gotten some rain. Really glad to hear that. BTW, dogs are coming on my daughters yard and peeing on her plants. I think one of them is dying, the plant not the dog, yet. Does anyone have any remedies for keeping them away?
