Banana?

Mifflintown, PA(Zone 6a)

I picked up a bansna plant at Lowes. I got brave and planted it in the ground, instead of letting it potted. I now have 2 pups how do I seperate them, or do I let them alone till a certain time? Dixie

i would leave them alone and separate next year. There are many threads around here w/ excellent tips on how to care for inground nanas in cooler areas. I was surprised however, that my inlaws who live in zone 7 lost their inground nanas winter of 04. They've had them for 3 years and the first 2 years they pulled out. At my insistence they left on the ground this past winter and did not come back. I had to make good by giving them another one. Don't understand what happened, but still, I do believe they can make it inground, with precautions, in colder areas. good luck and enjoy.

I'd let them get about a foot and a half tall and slip a sharp spade between the mother plant and the pup and cut it loose from the mom. Then just be careful digging them up from there. Unless they are hardy to your zone, you will need to at least keep a pup over the winter to insure you have one again next year. I have a bunch of Dwarf Cavendish pups that need to be separated from mom, but she is in a twenty gallon pot and it is a lot of work. Have fun.

Thanks all, I will have to dig mine and pot over winter. I hope this is possible with the big plant also. Dixie

I had to drag in a ten foot tall one last year. LOL Apparently I bruised it in 2 spots getting it in and had to cut the bad spots off. I ended up losing the huge plant but got 3 babies from it and get to start over. :)

Here is a pic taken back in May. DH, DS and I worked for a couple of hours getting all the pups off this nana. (We did it just like Brugie said to) It was tough and hard work, but I think we ended up with 18 pups. These pups were from last year that we left on over the winter. I have to bring them in here, they will not overwinter outside.
