Beautiful! The last picture makes you want to go and walk thru your garden.

Yours looks better than mine - they are being attacked by canna leaf rollers this year. I hope you don't have the leaf rollers where you are!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks
No leaf rollers yet!

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

Tom, I also have been attacked by the leaf rollers this year. What in the world will control them? I have been using Sevin Spray but it is a pain. Jenny

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Beautiful! And your garden is lovely...it looks so cool and inviting.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Ooooh, that is pretty. I also love your lush landscape. You've really made a nice environment. I planted some cannas this year and can't wait for them to come up. I have a tropicanna and another that the name escapes me. How tall do they get? I'm hoping pretty tall since I planted them in back of a large urn that I was hoping to have framed by the beautiful foliage.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks, there about 4 ft tall before the first blooms by summers
end around 6 ft or better.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

That would be perfect. Wish me luck. :~D

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Tropicman, your canna foliage looks so lush. It is so hot here right now that my foliage is turning brown on the edges, even though we water every other day. It is 103 deg. today, and has been over 100 all week.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Mini, the heat here in the 90's wilts the flowers a little,by the end of the day,but not bad, foliage lightens up somewhat in the color of the leaves.

I've use a bleach and water spray , to help controll the leaf rollers. you have to spray often, but it does the trick.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

What portion of mix?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Lookin good Tman, can't wait till I'm sittin there.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks, the way things are growing,it will be a lost city, like one of the myans in central america, faster I prune it back the faster it grows!!
Always an extra chair.or pair of snippers!!!! LOL

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Can anyone identify this one? It popped up amongst my red ones.

Hey Look, it flowered! Barely above the pot, but perhaps it will get taller as it gets older. I love these they're so pretty! Do my leaves look normal? They have lost some of their color. Thanks!

cnswift,is yours getting full sun?
Kdig, need to see some leaves as well as flowers, and still might not be able to id it.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi Tropic, Yes it gets blazing hot in this corner from about 2pm on. Being that it's behind this large urn, it gets shade on the bottom leaves however. Do you think it's too much sun for it?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Cannas need full sun, with maybe late afternoon shade, total of 6 hours sun if possible

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Ok, then it should be well suited for it's location. That's about what it's getting aside from the shade being in the morning instead of the afternoon. I was more worried about it burning in the sun and heat since there is so much heat reflected off the house. Thanks for the advice!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Your welcome, feed and watering them and standback and watch them grow and flower...

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

I hope they continue to do so. I've been feeding them something reccommended by the nursery called 'gro power pro'. They seem to like it so far! :)

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

silly question here. Are canna considered heavy feeders? On a scale of light feeder like lavender to a major oinker like brugmansia, where do cannas (I'm growing tropicanna as my first canna) fall?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

In the banana family heavy feeders and drinkers as well.
Good luck, and full sun is best.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Would you recommend a fert high in potassium like 15-5-30 for cannas?

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Tropicman, that canna is so pretty; even if it never bloomed, you have beautiful plants with such pretty leaves. A double bonus, I think. Your garden is so pretty.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I think the higher phosphate is better for all flowering plants, like 10-60-10,like shultz bloom buster, potassium is great for coloring of foliage and healthy root formation.
But all in all,I use a lot of compost, organic material ,in my opinion,is the best of all.
This year I'm experiencing mixing my own,and adding it to my compost,10-10-10,plus,equal parts triple super phopshate, sulfur, ammonium sulfate,Muriate of potash.amd espon salt.seems to be sucessful so far, good foliage, lots of growth and flowering has been ok.
Thanks Roz,I've been noticing all the great blooms your having at this time, looking good there too!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hello again,

Tragedy has struck! Check out the canna now. :( I think it has been getting too much water, as the stalk looks mushy like it's rotting. I turned the sprinkler down to nearly off in this corner with hopes of drying it out. Do you think there's still hope? The little shoots look good, but this big one just flopped over and I had to remove it. This was the same one that flowered a few weeks ago.

So sad!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

You might take it out of the pot and soil and let it dry a few days,in the sun,to see if the rhizome firms back up,and then repot.
If there is more than one in the clump, remove the good ones from the bad ones ,so the rot doesn't continue to them as well.
Good luck.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

It's actually in the ground. Do you think I should mess with it?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Depends how hard it is do get another?

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Well it would be fairly easy actually, and the plant was guarranteed for a year. I just hope it doesn't come to that. It's been drying out for a few days now, so I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens. Here is a photo of the remaining plant, and there is actually a new shoot coming up so perhaps that's a good sign.

I just had a thought. Once they flower, does it reflower on the same stock? ...or does the stock die? Maybe that's what happened? Just a theory.

Thumbnail by cnswift
Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes they will flower again on the same stock, especially by keeping them deadheaded.
Yes it is sending up a new stalk!!!

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Tropicman for starting this thread and the BEAUTIFUL pictures! I am grateful for the good advice you're giving and am following along. I have my first Cannas and have just fallen in love with the plant. I have very little shade and am thrilled to find a plant that can stand up to this FL sun. I hope someday to have a fenceline planted with Plumerias and Cannas.

If I am successful with these, I'll start saving up to buy a few. Who knew that one bulb could cost $14.00? Champaign taste and beer pocketbook, that's me! LOL
Pati

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Ok, good. I'll baby this little stock and make sure he doesn't drown. :)

Pati, I can't believe your bulb was so much! I bought two 1 gallon established plants for about $8 each. One was at Home Depot and one was from a nursery. Things must be really expensive in Florida! Here I thought we had it bad in CA.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

cnswift, I haven't bought the bulb.....yet!! It's a Stugartt and costs $18.00. Still not as expensive as the Australian ones.

Two DG friends sent me Cannas, which I shared with my daughter, and they seem to be doing well in their pots. The Bengal Tiger (another favorite) didn't make it, so I found one of good size at Wal-Mart for $15.00.

The flowers are a beautiful bonus; as you can tell I have a passion for the varigated leaves. I'm going to put them in the ground in September, or should I let them stay in pots until spring?
Pati

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Patti, zone 10,I'd say it's safe where you live,
That stuggart is very sun sensitive,I tried growing it in full shade, and the white varigated just kept burning something terrible!!!
My bengal tiger hass really done well, and at the present is about 8ft tall and flowering profusely this year.the tropicanna is probably 6 ft tall and doing the same, flowering like mad this year.
If you haven't tried the canna musafolia, you'll love the banana like leaves and gets 14 ft tall, has small red flowers, but you really grow it for the foliage. Its a must for the real tropical look.
