what's going on with my witch hazel

See all the dark brown rings around this branch, everywhere there's a ring it can break off really easy, I have branches breaking off all over it, I finally get some new growth on this thing and something is taking it away, I see some leaves are eaten off as well, did what ever do the leaves, do the branches this way too? or is it some kind of disease.

OK, I'm no expert and I don't even have any witch hazel but from looking at your pictures, it looks like some kind of pest, maybe some kind of wood bore. I can't imagine a fungus causing such perfect and strategically placed rings. With that being said, I looked on the internet and found that the witch hazel has very few, if any enemies.

So, I'd suggest you take a clipping of it and contact your county/city's cooperative extension office. Either one of the master gardeners may be able to help or they can send it to the state's office (usually at one of the universities) for a diagnosis.

In the meantime, try spraying an insecticidal soap.

Good luck!

Well, all the infected, or bug infested limbs have fallen off now, and no other bad limbs are visible, and it has almost grown back double of what it was LOL. My husband said it might be some kind of cut worm, cause it would completely break off everywhere there was a ring around it.

Well good, I'm glad it's doing better!
