I'm living in Ireland for a few years and have left behind a house and MANY plants to a very kind better-natured half. Now we (he) has a half dozen brugs that will easily be 8+ feet tall by the end of the year - two are healthy but very lopsided because of a myriad of events - including one only having 1 of 4 branches over the Y because a 110 pound dog on a run can do a lot of damage. This year - everything is different, but the plant looks pretty bad.
Question - Is there a trunk size that becomes too large to cut and replant? These plants are in their third year and the trunks are fairly thick, but < 3 inches. I'm just reluctant for him to have to bring these in, heavy and awkward as they are, if he can restart them next year and only lose a little time growing them up again if he starts early.
Can a stem be too large to cut and transplant
Chop off at a node, I would say; but remember, you may want to keep the height. In that case, cut off most of the lower branches, and cut back much of the top branches, leving the center "trunk",
That's a thought - with just the trunk, would Doug be able to transplant to a smaller pot - right now we have these massive square pots that are really too big for one person to move.

They can be pruned ,just don't let him cut lower than the first Y
Or you can have him airlayer the trunks at a managable height
