Calla lily and caladium....

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

Neither came up at all. Nothing. Nada. I am in zone 5, and planted them in mid-late May. The caladium were in the ground in a mostly shady location and the calla lily in a container that I moved around between dappled sun and full sun. What did I do wrong? Tamara

Tamara - nothing to do with the zone - I used to live in Albany, NY and was successful with both callas and caladiums - annual only, of course, had to pull for the winter. Could be so many other factors - sounds like kid opening gifts before the parents are up on Christmas, but have you tried to dig any of them up and see if there is growth or if they're truly dead?

The only thing is that I did notice some fuzziness on the calla bulb...could it have been mold? I haven't dug it up yet, but I will. I would dig up the caladium, but I forgot where exactly I put them! ;-) Tamara (chock full of prego brain)

Prenatal dementia? :-) Good luck. I had some old caladiums I brought from NY to Dublin, but they dried out too much and rotted when planted. My only hope is a green goddess calla that has a 1/2 inch shoot coming up. I'm in NY for two weeks, so hope it'll be better when I get back to Dublin.
