No blooms on my Orchid Cactus

Graham, NC(Zone 8a)

I have several Epi's that bloom great during Thanksgiving and Christmas. But I've got a Orchid Cactus that I've had for at least 4-5 yrs that has not bloomed ever. I don't know what type it is other than it's supposed to have bright red blooms. It has long 3-sided leaves (is that the correct term?) in a 6" pot. The "leaves" are green with red towards the ends. I use Peter's liquid fert. at least once a month. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do? Thanks for any help.

Eric, try a Bloombooster/Bloombuilder type fertilizer with a high middle number. I'm not sure what the numbers are of Peter's, but perhaps it is not strong enough to help initiate blooms. I would use this fertilizer the first thing in spring once a week until you see buds form. Now that the time for spring flowering has passed, you could start with this fertilizer now and use it once a month until fall. Other supplements are helpful too such as Fish Emulsion, Superthrive, Spray 'N Grow, Epsom Salt, etc. Supplements can be added to the water every time you water. You should see an improvement next year.

Clare,

Thank so much for the info. Could you give me some names of the Bloombooster/Bloombuilder type fertilizers , so I'll know what to look for?

MiracleGro, Schultz, Scott's, etc. I think most of the major brands make a bloom booster formula. Look for a high middle number like 10-52-10.
