My Hyacinth Bean's leave's are curling. They also seem to have some sort of (spider like) webs on them. Any ideas what this is? And how I might stop it?
Thanks
Hyacinth Bean Problem
Wow, I've never seen anything go wrong with my Hyacinth's. Last year my dad did have a bunch of these spotted bugs on his. I think they were stink bugs that suck the plant juices. You might see if you have anything like that. Maybe the web is just from a spider, unless it's on all the leaves.
I would guess spider mites! And, on your last photo, looks like there's a tiny black insect of some sort.
My hyacinth bean started looking stressed about 3 weeks ago......something was munching on it a bit........and I sprayed with an insecticide (Malathion, I think). After about a week, the plant looked so rejuvenated, put on more blooms, and is now taking over the trellis! =)
I'd say chop the heavily invested leaves/growth, and spray it! And, grab any little pods ready for cultivating in case you need to start over.

It could be spider mites, but that webbing looks pretty thick. It's been so hot and dry here and the bugs have come out in droves. It could be anything. I'd just spray it with some soapy water and wipe off those leaves with the webs. If you find a bug or something that you can't get rid of with just the soapy water, try insecticidal soap. I wouldn't use any chemicals myself, not for this vine that is so easy to grow. Did you grow it from seeds you have or buy it?
Ah, Koncrete--you're probably right, but I have no patience for non-chemical solutions! I'm sure I make Organic types' skin crawl, but still, I see a bug, and my Malathion and I head out..........lol........
Although, I am TRYING my hardest to go straight organics with my herb garden. Don't want to make the family sick, you know......=)

I know bugs are hard to deal with without chemicals, but it's just so much safer to start with something less toxic. You never know, it might work. I have battled an invasion of lacebugs this year. They have almost killed my 2 large Yarrow plants, and are attempting to kill almost all of my zinnias. Since my garden is for butterflies, my zinnias are very important! This is the first year I've had to resort to anything other than insecticidal soap. I'm using a product with pyrethrin in it, but only on the specific plants. I've been disgusted almost to the point of going chemical, but then I think about the life cycle that I love in my garden. What if the bugs eat the leaves, then they die, then my wonderful toads or birds eat the bugs, and so on... I decided it wasn't worth it. I could just replace the plants. Do try really hard MKJ! :)
I grew them from seeds. How about neem? And it's organic too.
Oh yes, I bought Neem recently too. I haven't used it yet, but think I will do that tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder.
