Duskywing Skipper Nectaring On Tithonia 'Torch'
Duskywing Skipper Nectaring On Tithonia 'Torch'
Ed, I am always looking to attract new butterflies to my yard. To do this, I see what other's are using then try to add that plant.
I was interested in the plant your Duskywing Skipper was nectaring on. I went to the plant files searching for Mexican sunflower Tithonia "torch". Low and behold, there is a listing, but not a picture.
A suggestion to you. Many plants on Dave's don't have the best quality pictures with them, or in this case don't have a picture at all.
I am suggesting you take your best shots, with or without butterflies and submit them to the plant files area, via pictures.
Then all of us would benefit from the pictures and information, not just the butterfly forum users.
It's a simple procedure to execute. You simply go to the plant files tab. Then do a "generalized search" on your plant, in this case, Mexican Sunflower 'Torch' Tithonia rotundifolia. That will bring up a series of listings which will include your search flower.
You click on the entry and it will bring you to the plant file for that entry.
You can then read what the plant is all about, add in your own comments about the plant, or send up a picture, or any combination of the above.
If you did exactly as above you would see there is no picture of that plant. Your picture would be a welcome addition to the files.
A few other things happen automatically when this is done. Your username, which is currently listed in blue, is an active link to your "My Info" area. Any user can click on that username and go to your area to see where you have made posts, plant files you have made comments on, or the pictures you have posted. Your personal e-mail area is there also. There is an area where you can set up your own personal journal and a variety of other things.
As an example, click on my username and you will go to my area. If you scroll down you will see the comments I have made, zip code posts, and my pictures I have submitted. I suggest visiting the pictures I have submitted so you will have a better idea of the suggestion I am making above.
I am not trying to interfere with your activities here at all, just trying to get your good pictures out where everyone can enjoy them as I do.
One more comment. I mention your username in blue. If you click on another's username, it will turn green. It notes to that user when looking at users commenting in the forums, that the green username has looked at your information area and vice versa.
Any questions, just ask. I am not an expert by any means, but I am getting around pretty well.
Art
OK, artcons, I have posted about 10 old pics of Torch (but I don't know how long it will take them to put them up or if they will weed out some of them. I didn't have many pics which show the foliage). I also told them that it grows here and put in a positive comment for it. I can only say good things about Torch. It is definitely a winner. It grows and flowers well in unimproved soil. If you fertilize it too much it will get over 6 feet which makes it difficult to get Macro shots of the critters that come to sip the nectar.
Thanks for the info and help. Check out the pictures when they post them and you will see why I like it.
I just love these flowers! I grew them for the first time last year. They do like regular sunflowers here, in that the bottom leaves get brown and kind of ragged, so I was glad I had them in the back. The butterflies were so excited over them! I have some coming up from seed, not as many as I had hoped, but better than none. They aren't very big yet tho. I don't think they are getting enough direct sun because they are at the back of the bed. Hmmm....not sure how to correct this.
I bought a pitiful looking pot of them at Wal-Mart recently. I was disgusted that they had failed to keep them, and many other things, watered because they are such great plants and to have a big pot of them already growing is a great find. I bought them anyways and am keeping an eye on them. I will go tell them today that they must start growing!
They are about 6 stalks all together. I thought I might be able to separate them, but they seemed pretty root bound. I guess if they don't start taking off I can always dig them up and separate them and see if they live. Better to have at least one than 6 that die, right?
