variegated Umbrella palm aka papyrus

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Bought this plant last spring. New shoots are coming up solid green. If you grow this plant willl you please post here your experience with it? Will it develop variegation later on? thanks

It tends to revert real bad..hard to keep white and green..especially if fed a lot. I finally gave em away........

That stinks! That is one of my favorite seasonal plants for the pond. I have never even seen a variegated one but I bet that is something to see! Is there any way to tell which shoots are variegated and seperate them from the green ones or do they just suddenly all go green?

I guess you can quickly tell 'cause the shoots are solid or variegated. Problem is, if you were to cut/pull off the greens, you wouldn't have much of a plant left!

I bought the var. papyrus from Lilyblooms and the logical thing would be to ask them, but the owner is a rude and condescending man and I don't waste my time on people like that. I bought one which was badly damaged due to bad packaging (you'd thought it was packaged by a 6 year old). Called the owner who promptly sent a replacement. The replacement was, again, damaged from poor packaging, so I called again. First thing out of my mouth was to tell him I DID NOT want a replacement, but that since he was so good in sending a replacement in the first place, I was going to "help" him by letting him know packaging was very bad and that perhaps more training in that area may help the problem. Well, he didn't like that at all. Heck w/him. I put the two damaged plants together and they are growing well, but reverted abougt 70-80%. That's not my idea of a variegated plant.

OK, I'm calmed down now. He likely knows a lot and has suggestions that might help. Chele, are you sweeter than me? Maybe you should call them and ask...

LOL Vossner! I have about had it with rude owners, service people, servers, telemarketers, etc. Oh, don't bet the farm on me being any nicer. :) I deal with kids for a living. LOL If you want, I will call and ask how you keep it variegated though.

well, yes i'd like that. you have to talk to the owner. I believe he is surrounded by people that know squat but he seems very competent, just kinda rude. Or maybe he's just stressed out because his helpers are a bunch of nitwitts. That would get anybody cranky, right?

Besides this is the kinda info that could be added to PF for future buyers. I paid $16 or so plus shipping. That's not too terribly bad but if it reverts to the green (which I can get for free all day long around here) then that's a bundle to me!

thanks

I found the site and bookmarked it. I will call tomorrow and be my most charming self and see if he eats me for lunch. LOL
