Well, last night we had terrible wind, thunder, and lightning, just a splash of rain, we are badly in need of water, next town got 2" This morning my heart broke when I checked my Brugs I found 9 buds on the ground, 2 more than I thought I had, one bud about to open was OK I am begining to think Indiana is NOT the place to raise these beautifull flowers, next year I will only keep a few in the greenhouse.

Loosing the BATTLE
I'm sorry to hear that Doris. I've had Brugs since about 1996 and while we've had some bad years (short summers, wind, hail, and one record breaking cold didn't help) we've also had some extremely good ones with them. If I had just started with them two years ago I think I'd be ready to throw in the towel but the previous years were really rewarding with them. Don't give up too soon.

I'm so sorry Doris, what a shame. We just had blessed rain but the wind was tough and limbs broke off leaves that stripped down the sides of PB and Rosamond but at 9+ feet tall, I'm lucky they didn't snap. What a cheery, healthy, tough bud!!! I'll bet as the summer goes on you will get lots more and when I say my prayers, there will be a rain prayer especially for you!!
okay will try to send you some rain as i DONT need any more.
we are drowning down here. its so muggy and humid from all the rain its crazy. suns out right now and its raining.
all i can say is keep trying. i know no flowers is heart breaking as i havent gotten any blooms myself. not enough sun here.
i am sorry though and hopefully that one will be beautiful. dont give up.
Thank you Sherry, we sure need all the rain we can get, farmers are in bad shape for the corn which is a lot more important thasn my flowers.
Hang in there Doris. You'll be smelling sweet brug scent soon, and hopefully forget about the bad times. (Like we forget about labor pains ..... sort of) Hugs!
Mary
I'm so sorry. I had the top broken out of one of mine and it had 4 blooms on it so I know how you feel.

Doris,
I am so sorry about your Brug. It's too bad I cannot send you the 8" of rain we got in the last two days.
I planted my Brug close to my house, so even with the wind that comes with the rain, the plant is thriving. Maybe putting something to break the wind near the plant might help.
Take care!

Doris, I get this way after storms too, when we get hail.I put my brugs on the east side of trees or buildings to help protect from the winds we get here.

This is my first year with Brugs, and it's a tough one. I think just about everything has hit that can, the latest is I have a very health Brug, lots of good green leaves with a Y, but now all the new leaves coming in are all curled.
Doris
Doris,
Please don't get discouraged. We're still learning and it takes time. I just read if the leaves look like spinach then it's mites. Why don't you post a picture so someone can tell you what it is and what you need to do to fix the problem.
Judy
Doris, my first brug year was holy heck, I mean it was tough. I'm beginning my second year and I thought it would be a breeze - it has not been a breeze, but it is better than the first year. IMO there are lessons to be learned and one must participate, and handle the ups and they downs, in order to learn the ins and outs of these fascinating plants. Is it worth it?? So far, for me, the answer is yes. What the heck would I be doing otherwise, eh?? Gardening is a wonderful activity and the people one meets, along the way, is worth the gardening problems one must work through and it's fun. But, it ain't all uphill, lol!!!
Hang in there, they do recover. I put my l'Amour in the ground last year (zone 9b here) and you just wouldn't believe what a hurricane will do to a brug. This year the darn thing is 6 feet tall and growing, and has had about a thousand blooms in 3 waves so far.
Did you spray with something in the heat to cause if Doris? I've done that a few times. And I learned that spraying Water/Alcohol for aphids is a big NO-NO in the heat. It sure burns them. Looks like you're going to have buds soon from the sub-equal leaves.
Doris, I've had leaves do that. Mine appears to be chemical burn or too much fert or maybe I didn't let the buckets sit long enough before I watered. Could not find any bugs, except cats and a leaf roller and a leaf hopper - but that's not the kind of damage they cause and I only had a few of those bugs. What I did to one brug, I did to all and what I have come up with is that I know plants should be well watered prior to applying chemicals, fert, Epsom Salt, anything - so my guess as to why I have some brugs with the problem and others that are just fine, happened because the ones with the problem might not have been watered in well prior to using the chemical or fert or other. Also, I'm seeing that seedlings and some in pots have had more of a problem than established plants. I don't know if any of this applies to yours Doris, but I thought I would throw it out there for you. This damage is clearing up on my brugs and I have been very careful and busy seeing that each brug was well watered before applying anything and I let my water sit several hours before watering. Yes, I have LOTS of watering buckets...
Thanks for all your help, I still have not found anything on the leaves, I have sprayed them with Bayer Rose and Plant spray so will see what happens
It's hard for me to see but just another suggestion which you probably don't need or want, but could it be a mineral deficiency? Like maybe calcium?
I sure do know the feeling Doris, Last week I took all of the large leaves off of my plants because they looked like they were hit with buckshot. Hail. Fortunately they all have new leaves growing up and down the stalks.
I didn't lose any buds, but only had a few and they were small. Your one bud is beautiful. Don't give up.
Jeanette
Hi Doris,
Don't give up, it is worth every effort you give it. Last year I started with three and now about 15 or so, I have four in bloom right now but still waiting on the rest to bud.
I sit out side at night and just take in the wonderful fragrance and then I know that all the work is well worth it. It takes me to another place anytime I want to go.
I am pretty sure we have already met at the plant round up in Ohio this past spring. E-mail me any time if you want to take Brugs or anything else love to chat.
JoAnn
Doris I can relate to having bad weather. Last night about 10:00 it started to rain, which is something we very much needed. But at 12:15 the hail woke me up. I laid in bed cussing, then when it quit I rolled over and went back to sleep. Then at 3:00 the hail returned I think they were even bigger and better, if you know what I mean. Will I went out first thing this morning to check out the damage. I do have some broken leaves, and of course some very holy ones. But none of my brugs are broken in half, which is good news. I did end up which one Castor bean plant that was broken in half.
I have three brugs that are in pots on the patio that there leaves are curled, crispy and dying. I had used the wrong fertilizer on them and I finally went in a pinched off all the bad leaves and now they are coming back. But they are naked brugs, except for the small new leave growth. My problem may also be is I have watered and fertilized in the heat of the day. So should I wait until evening to do the fertilizing?? Then also make sure they have been watered good that morning to help prevent the brug from being burnt??
Linda
I am like you this is my first year. You are far way ahead of me, I am still waiting on mine to have buds. Maybe some day if the weather permits me or if I don't kill them first.
2pugdogs, I wonder how long it takes to become imune to all the problems.
I have realized that all the Brug lovers encourage us to grow them but never mention the torment we go through, maybe we should bring back the TAR & FEATHER punishment *LOL*
I know what you mean, they get us hooked on Brugs, and here we are, wondering if we will ever be a good Brug grower. They are even so generous as to send us cuttings and seeds to get us hooked. Then here I am hooked line and sinker, trying to grow Brugs. Maybe one day we will make it. LOL
Linda
Do you know what else is funny? My spell check doesn't even recognize the word Brugs, it keeps wanting me to change it to brigs.
Isn't that so funny.
Linda: Three things to remember - a dog or kid or spell checker will make a fool outta you, if you give them a chance. One time my spell checker changed my last name, Gibson, to Gibbon, and I had to explain to 1,500+ dog people on my Golden forum that I knew that I was not a small, tree dwelling ape with a slender body and long arms that allow it to swing rapidly from branch to branch, but I do have long arms, but my once slender body was now a bit chunky and my last name is Gibson, not Gibbon...
Sherry that is funny.
thinkdirt, we have never met but maybe one day we will, I have never been to a roundup, mainly because I do not drive that much.
2pugdogs, you got that right, Kell was the ring leader, then Brugie, then came a few more with cuttings I could not turn down, then I started asking for some ,not I am over my head , I still look for more that I don't have, it is amazing how you get hooked on these Brugs like no other plant.
So nice of you to say so, Doris, thank yew!!!
