Visit Pat this weekend

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

I am going to visit Pat's nursery this weekend, around 10 am. The estimated day for "grab bag special sale" is next week, July 10 - 12, but I want to go and take a look of the Epies before ordering.

I looked over and over again the catalog, and still cannot decide what I want. I think I want all of them, but my budget (and my DH) will not allow that. I know Epies are supposed to be night blooming, but there are some that open for a few days, right? Which ones are they that have pink or yellow flower?

I already have red flower (opens several days), and a white one (night blooming). Sorry, I don't know the names, and the flowers now are gone to take pictures. Can you identify them without the flowers?

Well, too many questions already. Thank you very much,

Eliza

Eliza, generally, the white night-blooming fragrant ones are Epiphyllum oxypetalum.

Also, generally, the colored day-blooming nonfragrant ones are Epiphyllum hybrids.

There are some different species and different hybrids so colored ones can be night-blooming, and there are day-blooming white ones -- some are fragrant and some are not. The day-blooming colored ones last for several days, but the night-blooming white ones usually only last for one night.

Thank you very much for the links. I didn't know I am supposed to leave the cuttings outside for 1-2 weeks, and withhold watering. I hope they don't rot yet. Cross my fingers.

I went to Pat's nursery this morning. Very impressive. A very big collection.

I got Vista Gold, Connie Mayer, Sou You, and Front Runner.

The picture shows what's blooming in my garden. What do you think I have?

Thank you

I don't know what it is, but it is sure pretty.

Kateliza, congrats on your purchases! Do post pictures when they bloom! Your pink is lovely. I don't know which one it is either, but it is very pretty. These days, there are hundreds of hybrids, many of which look alike, so putting a name to it will be difficult.

Eliza, your pink is very pretty. Isn't Pat's great to visit? Like a candy store! Look forward to seeing your new ones when they bloom.

Hi,

That is the one that I brought to the Southern CA Roundup. I forgot who took it.

I came back to Pat the second time last weekend. I came to pickup the order from the Brownbag sale. 1.50 per cutting. I got 10 cuttings, and shared half of them with my friend. I am waiting for them to heal to put them in pots. Wish me luck.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Kate, you don't have to wait for them to heal. I would just stick them right in some soil now. The heat will help them root faster so the sooner you get them planted, the faster they will root while the weather is still warm.

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh, great. I had pots with soil ready waiting for the cuttings to heal. I will stick the cuttings today after work.

Thanks, clare_CA

Pat has a special "Grab Bag" Sale going on if you want to get more cuttings.....click on Specials on her website:

Lovely flower!!

That's how I got my 10 cuttings. Oh, I see. I said "brownbag" instead of "Grab Bag".

Sorry

LOL......you made me go back and look at the website to see whether Pat called it "brown" bag or "grab" bag.

It is an image of a "brown" bag into which your "grab" bag choices will be placed. :-)

Man, I'd love to order a Grab Bag... but since I have NO idea where I will be living come winter, I'd better not. Besides, I have close to a dozen cuttings of epies from last summer, and another dozen holiday cactus all in 6" pots already!

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

LoL - I like how you say it.

Yaay, they are alive. The cuttings I got from Pat shows sign of being alive (new roots or shoots).

I went out to Pat's last week also and had a wonderful time. Her nursery is full of Epis everywhere, and she took the time to show me around and explain things I didn't know. I got a bunch of cuttings and small plants too. I was like a kid in a candy store. Could not even decide which ones to get. What a nice lady and fun time.
Can't wait to go back in the spring and see all the blooms. :-)

That's awesome that you have the opportunity to get to go and see Pat's place. I've drooled over her pictures on her site.

Marcy, isn't she great? She and her husband are so eager to share info and answer questions. Maybe we should have a DG meet there in spring. :-)
