Epsom salts

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Finally remembered to buy some! (After heavy garden work, I need a hot tubbie for a soak.)
I make up a four gal bucket when I use my fertilizers; how much to use per gallon?
How much to pour per large pot?

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

Hi, Polly -

I use about 1 heaping TBLS per gallon

Diane Krny

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

I can't remember but what does the epson salts do again?
:) Donna

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Thanks, KRNY's Girl;
I am expecting it to act like "Hemo!"
(wondered how many of you know what that is - I'll know you are over 50 if you do)

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

umm..sadly, I will be 51 in 2 weeks -- but I don't know what Hemo is...

:-)

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

From what I remember reading on one of the threads, Epsom Salt can help your leaves turn a darker green. Someone please come in and correct me if that isn't the case.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

*cough*stutter*cough- Someone I know used 1/2 CUP per gallon because she read the directions on the package wrong. I'm just saying is all. LOL... I'll let you know if my 'friend' killed her plants or not. :)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

ROTFLOL What is your friend's name? lol lol
I do not expect an answer to that question. Cute!!

Judy

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Sure hope it wasn't me! I can't remember how much I used. But mine are still all alive and well!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I have EpsoGrow, says 100% Natural Epsom Salt-Magnesium Sulfate. It is a plant food supplement.

Think you are ok Kristi........for potted plants, 1/2 C per gallon of water, water with mixture every 4 weeks. For all types of outdoor plants, 1/2 C per gal of water, water over leaves and roots every 3-4 weeks. The secret of European gardens..

Brighter flowers
Bigger vegetables
Stronger greener leaves
Enriches soil

I'm well over 50 but I don't know what hemo is, maybe short for homogenize or hemoglobin???

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Hemo was a chocolate syrupy supplement my mama gave me to build up my skinny little body (make me a he - man) - worked - made me a "plump" old lady (that and a few other goodies).
Okay, you under 50's how about Hadacol?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Pollygardening, that must have been the thing to do back then, if you were the least little bit underweight. I've never heard of hemo, but my mom gave me cod liver oil, every kind of vitamin available, and mixed raw eggs in milkshakes, all in the hopes that I would gain weight. I really was a skinny little thing. It must have done the trick and then some. Oh, if she could only see me now. LOL

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

lol I'm under 50 but not by to far and I don't think I have heard of hadacol

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I'm 65 and haven't heard of either one.

Magnesium is really important for growth (humans too). Calcium isn't absorbed without a good ratio of Mag. - I use it fairly often...because our soil is very depleted in Cal/Mag.

....toodles...

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Not neccessary to buy the pricey stuff labeled for plants. Just the plain old epsom salt usually found in the health and beauty section. Turns the leaves a beautiful dark green . I use it regularly on many of my plants, including my brugs. I sprinkle a half a handful on the ground around the plant or I mix half a handful in my watering pitcher.

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Good site - good advice.
(Hadacol was very popular 30 or so years ago and was marketed to the elderly. Except for containing 25% alcohol - which I DO recall, I've forgotten what else was in there; smelled like molasses - got your day started with lots of pep - LOL)
My poor Brugs, after a costly bout with S mites, are slowly coming back; several were totally defoliated. It caught me by surprize, and I took the good advice of you all and washed them, and added Bayer Rose systemic. Now they need another boost.
After tending and nurturing them all winter, I have been aiming for my DH's 80th this Monday, Even with the S mites they were all blooming profusely two and three weeks ago; Monday I should have TWO blossoms on all of 15 plants. We have 3 tents all set up, and lots of colorful table cloths and flowers, but everyone has heard about my Brugs!
(They will wonder what all the fuss was about!)
We'll have about 90 people - 35 or so are family from Memphis, LA, San F, MO, etc.
Lots of yellow daylillies and tender lillies, and thank goodness for the bountiful cleomes everywhere, and many hydrangeas.
But NO Brugs - mother nature runs things around here!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Polly: Hope you have blooms on each brug for DHs' big 80th.
Cheers, hope he has a good Birthday. Let's see some pics.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Polly Hope you all have a wonderful day for DH's 80th with family and friends

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Many thanks; I'm nearly ready (DH forgot to pick up my cute, well fitting slacks and shirt at the cleaners
yesterday, but it's HIS b'day, so he'll have to see me less than snazzy!)

Polly,

Hope all goes well.

Thanks everyone for the explanation on the Epson Salt. I couldn't remember how much to use.

Kin posted a good link for the Epsom Salts.

A while back I posted that I used 1/2 cup per rose and tomato per plant per season. If you look at Kin's posting they recommend even more than that.

Your friend may not have been too far off Kristi. I really do not think ES will hurt the plants. I think it stablizes the PH.

They even recommend spraying with ES for bugs. Who knows, it may work on spider mites. LOL

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Many thanks, all, for the good wishes.
DH is off having breakfast with his family from far places at the old Thomas Jefferson Hotel. I am currently doing a hide-everything from the kitchen counters, and arranging flowers - writing this as I await tea water to boil.
Have bouquets ready for all the outside tables, and all the lighting is up outside and inside the tents.
Piano playing son is bringing a big, all in one orchestra contraption in which he has programmed many of my favorite songs to play with tonight - we have filled three coolers with ice, and more in the freezer.
Sound like we are ready?
I'll keep you posted tomorrow -

Polly, it sounds like a wonderful party, I know you all will have a swell day, and I am so very happy for you and your hubby, as well as your family and friends!!!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Polly,

How did the party go? Do you have pictures? If so we would love to see them.

Judy

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

OHHHHHH BAD BRUGS BAD!!! Too bad they did not put on a show for your party, Polly. I hope your party was a huge success. It sure sounded like it was going to be THE EVENT of the season. Did you take any pics? So your DH is a 4th of July baby! All those fireworks just for him. LOL

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Polly, are you ok? Or are you still entertaining relatives from out of town? Haven't heard anything from you. Hope you and the party came out good. Let us know.

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Been entertaining all week - took DH's brother and wife to the airport at 8:30 am to return to LA.
The party was everything I dreamed it could be!
All six grandchildren (21 - 15) greeted and charmed the guests, my daughter strung clear Xmas lites all around the yard; we had 25 torches lit, and seating for all 90 on the patio and under the tents with r& w and Blue & w checked tablecloths over white on the tables.with bouquets of red and white carnations. The caterers served dinner from the screened porch adjacent to the patio - jumbo crab salad, shrimp salad, t. aspic, marinaded asparagus, tenderloin with rolls and horseradish sauce. For dessert I had bought 4yummy layered icecream desserts from Coldstone.Creamery.that feed 25 each. Masses of red and white roses on the porch.
My son played favorite show tunes, jazz and oldies but goodies on his "orchestra" comb piano.
The night was beautiful, and everyone had a wonderful time!
(Son stayed and played for his happy mom until 2 am, with sister singing my favorite songs).
DTR took pics, and we'll get some to show you, soon.
I am POOPED today - had dinner party here Tues for family, toured local botanical garden and conservaory Weds, and all took me and DH out last night. (HAd to keep up with my eight doggies, too).
Loved sharing this with my Brug buddies - thanks for all your interest!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Polly, would you puleeze send me some tomato aspic, I LOVE it, could have it every meal and never tire of it - did you ever notice that aspic is not frequently (never here) served in restaurants!! Your description is wonderful, I felt almost like I was there. I'm so happy it was everything you dreamed it would be!!!!

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

I frequently make this simple recipe from the 1982
Urbanna Seafood Legacy:
Dissolve 1 sm lemon jello in 2 cups warm V-8 juice.
Add 1TBL lemon juice, dash of Worcestershire sauce
I chill in fridge an hour, then I add some chopped olives, or some cut up artichoke hearts or bottoms, chill anothetr hour or so. You can use a mold for dress up.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Sounds like such a wonderful party.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Polly, I cannot wait to use your recipe!! I can't imagine why aspic isn't used more, I've never seen it in restaurants, and it's easy and keeps well. I'll let you know how it turns out...

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Polly, I'll bet your DH loved seeing all of his family. What a wonderful party you gave him. He will always remember it.

Jeanette

RICHMOND, VA(Zone 7b)

Thank you all!
I started planning for it last Oct when I built my GH; overwintered 14 Brugs and 100 cuttings. Nurtured those 'lil devils all spring, and 3 weeks before the party all but two were covered in blossoms. So --- a total of 5 single blooms for the big day - so much for mama nature!
Still, there was much in bloom, and all the 4th of July colors dominated, and mama nature gave us a beautiful evening.
