New Gardener's Delight!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hi, I'm a new gardener and am so proud of my hibiscus. I've been battling aphids and now I feel victorious with my first blooms! Yahoo! I'm usually the one to ask all the questions about what I'm doing wrong... Ü

Congratulations. That is just beautiful. Is it a tropical hibiscus or a hardy one? Dotti

Thank you, I'm so excited about them. This is a tropical one called rosa senensis (sp?). I do have a hardy hibiscus too, but that one has yellow leaf issues. I have no idea what is going on. Any tips? too much water, not enough?

Christina - Awesome..... these hibiscus are addictive aren't they ....? I just finished planting 10 more new varieties in my garden...... Allow me to share a pic of one of my first blooms from my Kopper King....

I just saw a post on yellowing leaves that said it my be an over-watering issue...... I have yellow leaves on occasion but it never results in anything to serious and the plants seem to come out of it ..... I'm sure yours will too.....

You can tell you've given it good care, and the blooms are so pretty! Congrats on a great job! I'm fairly new to hibiscus myself and a Lipstick of mine has yellowing lower leaves, too. Hoping a change in what I've been feeding it will correct it.

vs71099, that's a beauty, too!

Thank you all for your kind words. I'm really trying to baby all my plants and give them lots of attention while they're so new. I want them to develop good healthy habits until they're established. It's a lot of work but I'm really loving it! I've never had a real garden and I've jumped in with both feet - pray for me that I don't sink. haha VS - your flowers are amazing, I love the color and size!

I'll try cutting down on watering of my 'yellow leaved' buddy. :)

Thanks again! Christina

PS: This site is so much fun!

Here's a photo of the hardy that I mentioned. I wish this was doing better. Any other suggestions other than reducing my watering that you think might help? Should I cut it back a bit? It's getting a little leggy. Thanks!

I got some info from this site.... but that looks more like a Rose of Sharon than the hardy Hibiscus I'm familiar with so they may need a little different TLC....

Keep us posted....

Hmmm, I could be wrong but I thought it was a type of hardy hibiscus. The actual name is Tree Mallow 'Bicolor' (Lavatera maritima). Thank you for the link, I'll check it out. I need all the help and education I can get! :)

cnswift..... I didn't mean to say it isn't a hibiscus .... sorry .... I just meant that it didn't look like my hardy hibiscus.......

Maybe someone can give us an overview of the breakdown of hibiscus, Rose of Sharon, and all the Mallows ....... Seems like I've read they are closely related but I haven't had any of these other than the Hibiscus to really get into studying the difference.......

Something to investigate........ unless another DG'er can give insight......

No need to be sorry, this is all a learning experience for me. gardening has become my newest passion and I hope to excel at it someday. I figure every mistake I make is an opportunity to learn from and hopefully I won't make the same one again. Thanks again friend!
