Anna, Contact the San Deigo wild animal park. They are growing all over the place as part of the landscape. When we lived out there, I spent more time looking at the protea (I',m a florist) than I did looking at the animals. They can give you the name of their hortoculturlist. Who can help you

san deigo is way to far away from me but thank you anyway:)
i did the same thing on our trip to disney land last year, i was wanting to take cuttings from everything lol

I used to grow proteas. Silver Hill is a pretty good place to get seeds http://www.silverhillseeds.co.za/ -- very nice people. I had the most success germinating and growing in african violet type soil, though I sometimes made the mix a little faster draining (I mixed my own soil, so YMMV - your mileage may vary).
Proteas are big flowers with tiny seeds (worse than poppies, better than orchids) and they can be a bit finicky, especially if you're not used to growing African natives. I wish I could point you to a domestic source of plant material, but I've never found one myself. Seems like more things are available on the market every year, but current import laws are getting worse. When I scaled back my plant inventory (now I only have a couple thousand plants) prior to moving, the Proteas were very easy to find homes for locally :)
