this is part of the tropical bed in backyard. It is almost getting where I don't have weeds.

Beautiful, Barbara!! I don't have too big of a problem with weeds, but it is hard for me to pull up all the plants that self seed (like cosmos!!) and as a result things end up looking messy in my tropical beds.

Your beds always look so full and lush!

nathalyn there isn't a thing in the world wrong with the way your garden looks. Very inviting.

BWard yours is so full and going strong.

I really like the looks of the both of them. Keep up the good work.

Both have beautiful tropical beds

Nathalyn-like the looks of your garden. The only problem-I can see dirt!!! you need more plants. LOL Question? What type is the lovely banana-it has beautiful leaf color. Also, what is the purple -looks like a corn stalk?

The only thing I let run rampant is 4 o'clocks.

Susie, where are the pictures of your TX gardens?

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Barbara, I hope that by the end of the summer, no dirt/mulch will be showing. Last year, I over planted and it just looked like a BIG mound of green leaves. I underestimated how large my elephant ears would get and so they were moved to another bed. I do have lots of cannas in there that are just starting to get some size on them. With the cool weather we had in May, things are late in getting going.

My banana was marked as a zebrina, but I am sure that it was mislabeled and that it is probably a Red Abyssinian Banana. The dark purple is Purple Majesty Millet that I started from seed. I love it as a filler plant - - here's a better picture of some from last year.

I am planning on yanking out some of the orange cosmos. I love the color but they are hiding my other tropicals that I have in there.

wow that millet looks great in there Nat. Great idea.

Thanks Donna. I thought the millet coloring would look good with the red banana. My millet that I started from seed looked so puney that I almost threw it out. But once it warmed up here, it started growing by leaps and bounds.

The white tropical hibiscus that you gave me at the FLRU is in there also (hidden by orange cosmos - - which IS getting pulled out).

Barbara.. your tropical bed is gorgeous.. I like the mixing of the different leaves and texture.. it adds interest.

Nathalyn... very lovely.. Now I wished I did grow some of that millet.. it is stunning. Your front ?? entrance is very inviting.

is millet that tall corn almost looking dark plant.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

The second picture is my back porch. The millet that I have started from seed gets bigger than when I have purchased plants from the nursery. The seed is expensive, but I have close to 100% germination and one or two plants makes a big statement. Plus, I enjoy watching the little birds eat the seeds in late summer.

Beautiful beds!
I've never seen the MIllet grown so well.
Mine looked like spindley sticks compared w/ those.
Kudos!

I just might have to get rid of my brug bed and do a combo tropical /brug bed after seeing what you girls have put together. I just love it ALL!! .

Kell, I'm seriously thinking of ripping out some more brugs. I'm so tired of watering them every day only to have the bugs eat all the leaves or the wind rip the flowers off them!
Barb, I just redid my beds. I am still working on them. I dug up the plants, worked in peat moss, a little gypsum to absorb salt, rabbit manure and some composted pine bark chips and then mulched with a light covering of cedar. I can't decide if I want to go with cedar mulch or pine straw. I'm still trying to figure out how to garden in this delta muck(sandy, powdery, slippery when wet mess they call dirt down here). I feel like a beginner.
As soon as they recover from being cut back, dug up and moved, I'll post pics.
