Bowersville, GA(Zone 7b)

A lady (don't remember her name) that I traded with by way of the Market Bulletin (GA newspaper) sent me a seed pod and said it was pink Angel Trumpet.
I think they all came up (last year) they were Brugs... I gave a lot of them away ... I didn't have room for all of them. Still have lots of them.
They bloomed white last year... I thought they might bloom pink this year....the ones that have bloomed so far are still white.
Can you identify this plant? I have some photos of the plant and the bloom.
You'll seem to be a knowledgeable bunch of gardeners. so here goes...

You never know what you are going to get from a seed pod. The only way to get a true already named Brug is to get a cutting of one.

Another to show a little more but do not have a photo of an open bloom.

MallieB, it is my understanding that brug do not come true from seed.

In other words, if I sent you seeds from Frosty Pink...you would not get Frosty Pink brugs...they would be a cross from whatever pollinated the seed.

You will obviously have some beautiful plants..but they would not be "named" brugs as their parentage is unknown. I'm sure she meant a "pink" angel trumpet...as opposed to Pink Angel Trumpet as a named variety.

they are pretty.

I also have a yellow Brug from a cutting someone gave to me...they did not have a name for it.
Can you help me with a name for it? Here is a photo of it in bloom last year...

Mallie, you need to check our responses we've already sent you on this thread! :-)

Karrie,
I did check them and appreciate the response... But the second one was not from seed... it was a cutting.
Thanks for your response.

oh, ok! Just specify that it is a cutting. But if it is a cutting of a seedling that isn't named, you still have an unnamed Brug. They are very pretty though!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Seeds from brugs do not come true to the mother plant Mallie, like Karrie said. Except sangs, arboreas and sang types. So each of yours is a little different even though they look the same. Genetically they are different. You have a suaveolens there. It has been my experience with suavs, that the majority bloom white and look just like that!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL. I started writing my above response when just Karrie has answered the first time. I got sidetracked. As usual. Anyway, the yellow is sure pretty. There are so many yellows now though, it is impossible to ID them anymore.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Its near impossible..I think.. to ID some of these things...and yellow seems to be one that has ALOT of different names and so many of them look "seemingly" exactly alike.

Honestly...I doubt you will ever have a name for it that you can feel 100% confident with..but it is very beautiful and I know that looking at it must bring you alot of joy.

If you get a chance, you could trade this fall for some named cuttings here and then you could be more sure of the different cultivars. I'm going crazy just trying to learn the flower parts >>>LOL... good luck...

Bowersville, GA(Zone 7b)

I don't know if the cutting is from a named variety or not... I did not get the name at the time. .... and I thought IF it was from a named variety some one from this group could tell me.
I guess it's not important..... they are beautiful plants and I'm enjoying them ... they smell wonderful in the evenings.
Thanks for the info.

I miss the smell! Can't wait for mine to bloom!

Charlotte,
You don't live far from me... If you don't recognize Bowersville.. you probably will Hartwell... I live about 5 miles west of Hartwell.

I liked your idea of trading for some named cultivars.... so will ALL OF YOU keep me in mine this fall and if I don't have anything you would like to trade for I will gladly pay you for your time invested and postage.

Many thanks, Mallie

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Mallie, you sure arent too far away... I live about 28 miles North and East of Clemson. I'll be glad to trade some named cultivars with you this fall if you will email me in late August and remind me. I would write it down but I would probably misplace the note :)

MallieB,

You've done a really good job of growing out the seeds and the cutting. You should be very proud of your achievement... some of us have not done as well the first time we attempted to do either.

Have you checked eBay for cuttings? I was on there yesterday and there appeared to be a good many. Also it might be a good idea to start now to make a listing of the named Brugs you like so when trading time comes around in the fall you will be prepared. There are several good websites with pictures and two societies or organizations with good websites. Please notice the sticky thread above, people posting on this forum are not allowed to mention the "organizations" because there is so much competition between the members, that emotions often run high.

Welcome to the Brug forum!!!

Congratulations on growing them from seed. You have some nice looking plants there.

Bowersville, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Charlotte,
I will keep you in mind this fall.

Thanks Judy,
Although I have bought on Ebay I haven't been there looking for Brugs.
I'll give it a try.

Sandy,
Who had the misfortune of wind breaking some of her Brugs has offered to send me some cuttings.... I appreciate it very much.... this will get me started with a named cultivar. Thank you! Sandy

My time to work in my garden is limited.... my DH is in the late stages of COPD. He gets most of my time now and will as long as he needs me.

I do enjoy all of you on DG.... I'm a lady that loves to work in the soil and grow plants from seed.... I have a small greenhouse (a retirement present) that I grow a lot of perennials for friends and neighbors as well as for myself. Brugs have really gotten my interest....especially reading this forum.

Mallie, great job. They're beautiful. There are just so many now, and they are hard to identify just by a photo. Most of mine are seedlings that I'm waiting to see bloom, but I do have some named ones and will have cuttings later in the summer/fall.

Just keep hanging out here, and you'll have more brugs than you have space to put them in the ground (ask me how I know).

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Mallie, Your bugs look great!
Sending good wishes for you and your DH.
Jackie
