Okay, this is my first year growing an elephant ear. I will post two pictures so you can see what it is like. Growing like a weed of course. I am wondering if it needs to be in a bigger pot. On the close up picture you can see small roots protruding. Not sure what to do with this/
Also, I am going to be using some of these leaves for casting. Is it okay to just take one or two off and use them, and the plant will be fine?
Thanks for your help.

Elephant Ear
It does look like it could use a bigger pot but I'd put it in the ground. They are really not that difficult to dig up in late fall. You don't even have to worry about getting all the roots. Just dig down about 6 inches away from the stem and plunk in a pot.
The plant won't even miss a leaf or two. I'd love to see a pic of the casting when you do it.
Thanks Liz. Will it do well in sort of a boggy area???? I could put it over in the same part of the yard that I put the gunnera, in sort of wet soggy ground by the slough????
I will definitely post a pic when I cast a leaf. I am thinking I will just take a leaf now and go ahead and do it. Shouldn't hurt the plant to take a leaf or two. The very first leaf is the smallest, so I may just try that for the heck of it, and then go on to a bigger one.
Thanks for your help!!!
Oh, and I guess I can hope the deer won't eat it!!!!!!
Glenda
It will do fine in a boggy area. You will be surprised at how much bigger they get when they are planted in the ground.
Those are 2 nice EE's.
mine was only doing fairly until I plunked it in the pond. It's grown in leaps and bounds since then.
I really like the leaves.......Glenda I think I'm going to have to research your leaf moulding techniques.
Linda then your EE is from the genus Colocasia ..........they are a marginal pond plant and like bog like conditions : http://davesgarden.com/pf/b/Araceae/Colocasia/
The ones Glenda and I posted above are from the genus Alocasia and they are happier on land: http://davesgarden.com/pf/b/Araceae/Alocasia/

Really nice plants, I don't think it will miss a leaf or two. Please post pics of the casting , I'd love to see them. You could get into making a mold from one leaf and then just reuse the same mold if you wanted to.
Cindy
Hopefully Glenda will come along and post some of hers Cindy. Both she and Wilma (dillpickle) have done it before and I think I remember reading that you also enjoy doing it. Do you have pics of your hypertufa (sp?).
Hi all!!! I've only done one elephant ear casting, and although it turned out really well, it is no good because my portland cement was old, and the edges of the cement are just falling to dust. I have been so busy the last few weeks doing other things like sanding and varnishing doors, I've had no time for cement. But I have to do my EE leaves soon or they will be no good. I will post ASAP after I get them done. I've done a few small hosta leaves and a hydrangea, oh and a brug leaf and a dat leaf.
Just hoping for the weather to hold out for my varnishing, and for us to get the yard work done that we started(trenching, and putting in drain pipes across the yard).
Always something to do, isnt' there??
