Culebra

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Has finally y'ed. I got it from Gloria before she passed. I haven't been able to get it to do anything until this year. I am so happy.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Wonderful!!! Can't wait to see it.

Judy

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Thanks Judy. It is still small but a y is a y. LOL

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Jim I hope you have better luck than me. Mine was Y'd last year but never bloomed, then the hurricane snatched it out of its pot and it laid there for 3 days before being repotted when we got home. I still have multiple Y's and no blooms

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I have a tiny, 4 inch one that is over a year old. It just won't do anything. Any suggestions? I understand it likes less water than others.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I'm so glad it Y'd for you Jim. I'll keep my fingers crossed you'll see blooms this summer.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

GRC, how long have you had yours and how big is it?? I would LOVE to see a photo. I had a tiny one given to me last year, I though it died, but it started coming back early in the fall. It is now about 20 inches tall with two other shoots that are shorter. It was all leafed out and someone asked me for a cutting and the minute I said sure, all her leaves all fell off. But they were coming back nicely, as they were falling off, and she has three curly topknots. I will make a photo tomorrow. I'm dying to see yours and her Y. Everyone that sees mine just loves it - she surely is a different looking brug...good luck on yours, I really hope you get some blooms!!!!!

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I sure don't know how to make it bloom. I have tried everything and would have quit a long time ago if I had bought it but being Gloria gave it to me made it special and I so wanted it to bloom because of her giving it to me. She gave it to me at the first Fl swap. I have followed all kind of advise, put in a larger pot, put it in a smaller pot, less water and the list goes on and on. I sure was excited when I found the y but if Donna can't get one to bloom I know I don't stand much of a chance.
Thanks Donna and Linda for your comments. Linda I wish I could give you some information on it but you sound so much like me the last two years. I swear it never got over about 6-8 inches the last two years and still not very large now.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I had one that bloomed about six blooms on each of two flushes. Mine was in full sun, but my full sun probably isn't as hot as yours is. The biggest problem I had was with spider mites. Basically, I treated it like all the other brugs. I sure hope you get it to bloom. The blooms are so unique.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Terry and Sherry, I didn't mean to slight ya'll when I posted last. I guess I was distracted when I was posting and took a little time and ya'll posted after I started. I will take a picture tomorrow and post on here. Thanks to ya'll for the comments. Shirley thanks to you for your information also. I think I am going to repot it again and give it some messenger this week.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Linda it likes less water and less sun once the humidity kicks in with the heat and as Shirley says whatch out for spider mites. I got them last summer too.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

GRC, no problem, I've done the same thing lots of times. Sometimes, some posts get wedged in above what comes up when 'skip to new' is clicked, so sometimes I don't see them until much later, if ever. I cannot wait to see your Culebra and your Y, many congrats!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Just get that Culebra to bloom Jim and all will be forgiven. LOL
I'm a slow typer so by the time I type a reply to something there's usually 2 or 3 new ones.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Here is my Arky Culebra - the blooms are DonnaB's Monster White, they have super holding power, LOVE the heat/humidity, and they bloomed in tiny pots before I could get them in the ground.

The top of the same Culebra. I wish it would Y. I just love it's curly leaves...

This is one brug that whenever I see it for sale I think I may buy it. But never do. I still might. LOL. I will be waiting to see yours Jim. It drives me nuts when one of my brugs will not bloom. Have you tried Messenger on it? It might give it that added push.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

I'm going to fire up my tomato success box and try to get a Culebra rooting and see what happens. It is so slow growing, so I really hope I'll be able to speed her up and find something she likes. This I will say, she has been in full sun to full shade and neither hurt her or speed her up. She went through 32 degrees outside in a pot and lived to tell about it, didn't bother her one bit. She dried out several times and been over watered several times, didn't bother her. She is not a bug magnet, but I have Wettable Sulphur, in case she gets mites. I really suppose I should have changed her pot, but I didn't. Maybe that would help. She doesn't seem to hate anything, but she doesn't seem to love anything either. I dunno.

Very nice Sherry, mine looks like the little bottom bit of growth and it's over a year old. Love your caladiums.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Thank yew, Linda - the caladium was almost a no go this year, tiny bulbs and the hurricanes, I think, did some kinda number on them. They were very late coming up...all mine from FL...

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

Mine grew and bloomed well last year, and put out several good side shoots, once I stuck it in the ground in bright shade. It's about 4 ft tall now, in morning sun but I haven't checked for buds. The bits I rooted last fall (one 2 ft one went to a contest winner) rooted ok, but don't grow worth a darn in pots in the GH. I'll get off my butt soon and stick them in a bed and see what becomes of them. It seems to me they usually go for $20 or less on ebay, but I don't recall if they are listed very often.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Maybe that's my problem. I have mine in a huge pot and not the ground

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Oh, lagata2, I'd love to see a photo of your 4 foot Culebra, do you mind taking a photo and sending it here??? Mine is only 1 year old and it's only 18 or 20 inches tall. Apparently, you wintered yours outside, eh? I bet mine would take off in the ground. I have a good spot with bright shade. The only reason I didn't put it in the ground last year is because it was on it's death bed when it got here. Now, I've gotten attached and don't want anything to damage it, like cats or squirrels or Goldens, lol!!!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Donna, I have mine in a pot too and it hasn't grown an inch in the year I've had it. I think I'll plant mine in the ground too. LOL

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Do you think we all hesitate to put them in the ground because they start out so little?? Donna I bet yours would really do good in the grown as far south as you are. I hope you will all post photos...

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

It's horribly hard to subject our most coveted babies to the harshness of nature, but I'm slowly deciding it's the only way to make them take off, or die a slow death from over protection. For instance, Peanut, a new double pink, just went into the ground at only 4-5 inches tall. (boy was THAT hard to do!!) It not only wasn't putting on any growth in the greenhouse, after a couple months, but was being eaten by aphids that I can't seem to clear out completely. After just a few days outdoors, still in a pot she looked better. Now to see if she will survive the full transition....

I'll get a picture of Culebra sooner or later (very busy and forgetfully here) and for sure when it's in bloom, which shouldn't be long, since it has several Y's.
Maybe I'll even do a contest here for one of the kids, if they will just leaf out well again. After writing the post above, I gathered them up (and a bunch of others) and took them out to the shady end of the seed bed to harden off and get real rain before putting them in the ground.

If I can only remember, I'll take a picture of them then, after living in pots for months without growth, and again a month from now, if there is the difference I think there will be.
Tough Love.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Kristi if you put a pot or 2 of Milkweed in the GH that with help controll them because the aphids will go to the milkweed before anything else.

Ozark, AL(Zone 8b)

??!! Need some!!! I don't think anything short of gasoline would actually get rid of them any more...collect and destroy just might! Thanks!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You are so clever Donna!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

no pesticides!!!!!!! I use hot water out of the hose when it has set in the sun all day to get rid of Spidermites on the rare occassion I get them. Hose the infected plant down kind of hard everyday for a week and clean all the debris out of the pot. Works like a charm

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Donna, Scoot told me about milk weed and, I think, flowering cabbage or kale, I had some flowering kale and have it with the brugs but I cannot locate milkweed, does it go by another name too?? I was a bit fearful of using the cabbage/kale, that it might attract cabbage beetles or worms or whatever they are; we have a garden with a whole, long row of cabbage and they do have the beetles/worms, so maybe they will stay back there, instead of coming to my garden...are there any other plants that might attract bugs away from brugs??? I have more butterflies than I've ever seen in my life in one location and they are beautiful, but I suspect they were eating my brugs when they were wee babies...

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Sherry it is Asclepias. I have some fresh seeds if you want some. I have A. curassavica Scarlet Blood Flower and Silky Gold which are tropical and don't need 3 month cold treatment. They are ready to sow. I saw Lowes had some here the other day but at 14 dollars for a 3 gal pot . That is outrageous!!!

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

After growing culebra for about 5 years, I have become use to it not blooming regularly. I just grow it for the foliage and every few years it decides to bloom and it is a wonderful surprise. It has gotten 4-5 feet tall and I take cuttings off of it to keep it in bounds. The best blooms it ever had were when it bloomed in the greenhouse. Cool nights!!! Which we do not have outside in south mississippi. I tried growing in outside and it did not return in the spring. Golden lady does not return here either. Zone 8a.
It might come back on the coast.-Donna have you ever tried keeping one outside during the winter?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Good to know Barb since I put my GL in the ground this spring. Will make sure to keep cuttings. Doubt I get to put Culebra in the ground before next spring. Trying hard to get most of them in the ground and out of those huge pots that have to go into the GH
