Hellp from East Texas

Tyler, TX(Zone 5a)

Hi My name is Mike Wheeler. I am co-owner of a wholesale nursery in Tyler, Texas with my brother. We have been in business since 1978. I have been in the nursery business all of my life as my Dad was a nurseryman, too. I am always looking for new plants to grow as well as help with problems. Looking forward to some good discussions with everyone.

Welcome Mike! What a neat heritage. Looking forward to seeing your posts. Does your nursery specialize in any particular plant type?

We grow 300 diferent varieties trees and shrubs. As far as any favorites I have that would be a hard question to answer. Even though I have been in this business all of my 53 years on God's Green earth I am amazed everyday at His creations. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not a preacher, but I still am amazed at how propagation works. We are always trying new things to propagate. I guess I'm partial to trees, especially oaks. We gather and plant all of our own acorns from our own trees. We buy some seeds such as red buds, and sweet gums, etc. I have multi-trunk liveoak in my front yard that my wife and I planted that is now 40 feet tall with three trunks totalling about 36 inches in caliper. We gathered and planted those acorns in 1984. So it went from a seed to one of the most beautiful trees around here in 21 years. THAT sort of thing is what I still marvel at when talking about God's creations. I will admit I am a deacon in our local baptist church and my wife and I are very active in it, but you don't have to have a degree from the seminary to recognize everyday miracles that are right in front of us. Enough preaching!

Hello Mike!

What? Are you telling me something other than roses are grown in Tyler? Just kidding. I live in West Monroe,La. and have been that way for roses a few times. How about propagating more variegated shrubs,(weigelias, abelia, Salix) native plants also-Something like carried by Pine Ridge gardens, Salix like they have on west coast at Heronswood , Only nice sized ones I can drive over and buy. LOL! OK I can start getting really greedy here with want list for North Louisiana. My pet peeve is that all the nurseries carry the very same shrubs they have for the last 17 yrs. I use to work at one & when I could get the owner to bid online for something different then he'd charge $25 for something I could order online for $7.So Post what ya got, see if you can lure a veteran that way. Welcome, Mike! I loved hearing about your tree -- can you post a picture of it sometime? Live oaks are probably my favorite tree, and wouldn't you know we don't have them clear up "nawth". ;)
