I have this old christmas cactus in a pot. I know it needs re-potting. My question is: Should I take cuttings to root anew and ditch the center part that has become brown and thick, or just re-pot?
It now measures almost 3 feet across.
Need advice, please
It's a great plant.
And if it were mine, I'd plant it in a bigger-flatter "bowl" and put it on a pedestal or log uprighted and secured so it won't fall over. That way it could trail down and would be gorgeous when it blooms. In addition you could take some cuttings and "fill" in the bare spots toward the center that should eventually cover the woody part.
They are difficult to handle when this large and floppy, but the pieces that break off can be put in the center or planted seperately for additional plants.
I like the age that shows from these older plants with their "trunks" as proof of how well and long they have shared their beauty.
Be sure to post an image or two when you've tackled this guy!
Thanks for the advice. That's sorta the direction I was heading... and I have a perfect pot for it.
You are quick! And yes, she looks excellent! Great job.
LOL, it was just my project for the day. Had to strike while I felt like doing it!
Darius,you did a great job-looks good.
Thanks. It will be a bear to keep inside this winter, though... due to width.
Looking beautiful in your new pot.

Thanks, Kaleem. Right now it's almost drowning in the daily downpours of rain. Have to find a better spot for it.
