See what I found at the nursery Sat. for 1/2 price. She has lost a lot of her leaves, and before I transplanted her I had to remove 4 more. But she is starting to get some new ones, so maybe it won't be long before she is full. I am leaving her in a pot and she sits under the roof of the patio. She will get sun but no direct sun. This is the one that sunburns easy, am I correct. I spent a little over $50 on half price flowers Sat. I thought I did good.
Linda
Snowbank for 1/2 price
My Snowbank is looking really bad. Last time I looked it had lost all of it's leaves. It is still in the gh as someone this spring suggested it liked more heat and humidity and less sun.
Our weather has turned off hot. It has been in the 90's and looks like it is going to stay there for a while. Snowbank should like that then.
My GH became like a steam room with a hot summer sun beating down in May - Snowbank did not like that! Her leaves were browning on the ends.
She is in the shade on the patio now, and we have summer heat aplenty.
I would think your GH would be like mine - too hot!
She likes shade.
I've had mine since last summer and i dont think she likes anything, lol. Has anybody had good luck with her? Seen her bloom?
I would grow her strictly for the foliage, but cant seem to find anything that she likes....short of putting her in a dark closet, i'm not sure what to do with it.
I gave mine away because I felt she was too picky for Iowa weather to deal with. We never know if it is going to be hot, cold, calm, windy, rainy, or worse. I tried everything short of growing her in the house. She bloomed a dozen blooms that were much like a versicolor bloom with a hint of peach. She bloomed in Oct. of last year. I'll take Maya any day.
LOL Jen, looks like my Snowbank just wants to show off her foilage too, cos' I'm not seeing a 'y' as of yet. She keeps getting taller but no 'y'....I love her foilage. I keep her on the front porch so I can let her strut her stuff out there with the underplantings she has. One thing for sure, she keeps putting out new growth from the bottom and I keep chopping them off and sticking in water bubbler!
I don't think my 'maya' is going to make it either. Oh well...but I do love her color, both of them :-)
I was never one to believe the snowbank problems... and had mine wintered inside and growing well throughout the winter and summer for two years... summer was spent on the roof with full sun from 6 am to 8 pm... and on a roof deck that topped off at 145 * most every day it was sunny... not a hint of problem or misery... flush after flush of blooms.. 30-50 at a time from this 4-5' bush... this winter i had it and it went into a leaf loss ... after the winter was about over . I put it out a month or so ago.. and have had maybe 3 dozen tiny leaves about 1/2" long up the stalk... today I noticed it was rotted.. from the top down... luckly the little nursery near me had them for sale ... great looking plants about a foot tall... for $10 each... had to have more of this one... flowers or not it's a knockout... and one I'd not be without... Gordon
You were able to keep snowbank in full sun and it thrived? All i can say is wow. Is she one of the ones that resents babying?
Mine is doing fine in full sun though my sun is not as hot here, I think. I have gotten great flowers on it also. I love it too. Much more variegation than Maya. Though I love the blue green of Maya's leaves.
Your plant sure looks great, Linda. Such pretty leaves. Is there a reason you have that screening over the top?
Funny, I too saw lots of Snowbanks today at a great nursery I stopped in at. They were bit more expensive than yours though Gorden. They wanted $40 for small plants in a 5 gallon pot. They becoming much easier to find. I bet becuase they are so beautiful.
Linda, your Snowbank is so healthy looking, you must be doing something it likes :-)
I got mine for $20 bucks up around Atlanta, GA. They had there's in full sun, ALL of them and they were doing great! I don't put mine out in full sun because I've noticed the leaves turn brown on the outer edges. Or maybe after they've been on the plant for a while they do that, who knows. She seems happy on my shaded front porch showing off her lovely leaves.
Snowbank is hands down a beauty :-) But so is Maya lol
holy cow Linda! What nursery in KS is selling brugs? I'd probably go on 3 day binge if I was to find brugs in nurseries up here. That or I need to actually go out to something beside WM, HD, and Bergman's. :)
Good grab!!
My little snowbank from Wayside is getting more sun that I thought in that position but looks like she's hanging tough and trying to catch up to Julie's crosses on either side.
Very nice pics. I t looks like it is just changing color.
Thanks for all the compliments. But I have only had it 3 days, lets wait and see what she looks like in a month. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Kell your Snowbank is beautiful. I hope mine grows up and looks just like yours. I need to print a picture of it and set it next to my SB so she knows what she is suppose to look like.
8ftbed, I went to Johnson's Nursery in Wichita. There was a DG'er (nut4spuds) on here that mentioned she had gotten 2 from a place in Wichita, before they ever put the price on them. They didn't know what to charge for them at the time so sold them to her real cheap. I e-mailed her and asked where she had gotten it and she wrote back and told me.

She thought she was getting Maya, but Kell knew right off what she had. I went up about a week later and saw them there and noticed they had the price on them, and thought I didn't really need one that bad to pay what they wanted.($24.99). Am I tight? I hesitated on buying one at full price because I had read so much negative things about the SB, doesn't like sun, hard to bloom, and if it did bloom the flower didn't have a scent. So glad I waited cause I got mine for $12.49. Still not as cheap as nut4spuds did.
Nut4spuds you don't know how good of a deal you did get.
MG99 I will copy a picture of yours and put it beside Kells so my SB knows it is suppose to give me those kind of flowers.
I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed in hope she will do good for me. I know some of my Brugs are looking good, but I have some that aren't looking so good. So I am not sure if I will ever make it as a BrugLady. I say a little prayer everynight so I can become as good as the rest of you and have nice big brug plants that are loaded with flowers.
Linda
Oh Linda, we all have ones we rather not take pictures of!! Believe me. You too can be just like us, though if I were you I would think twice about that. Remember the saying, be careful of what you wish for. I sure have gone overboard on these, I am truly dying here.
Anyway, that is not a picture of my Snowbank, those were at the nursery I was at yesterday, Orchards. I had to go about an hour away for a icky medical test, so after as a treat to me, I stopped at a bunch of nurseries I usually do not get to go to so often since they are far from me. I treated myself to all sorts of plants as a reward. LOL. I deserved them. Or so I told Tom, LOL.
I would go out and take a picture of mine but it is freezing out there. I am debating if i should wrap up in my fleece robe for my moring cup of tea in my secret chair.
Thats gorgeous!! I really have no luck with it, and feel so disappointed with it.
Do you fertilize heavily? Drowned it?
Just wanted to say i cant complain too much, i only paid 4.95 from wayside last year, lol
MSJen, I got one from either wayside or SpringHill or Parks, I cant remember which, and didnt pay but $4.95 for it too....mine is dead hahahahaha but its my fault no one elses, I neglected most everything when my Mama died....but the ones that did come back Im excited about too.......

mine is struggling, lol....i had a tentative trade for it (need to finalize) and watch next year, shell post pics of the most spectacular plant we've ever seen, lol.
i think it was wayside, notified by email announcement and went stupid shopping, lol.
usually i dont spend too much time on the picky ones, but this one has become a challenge.....hard to grow ones? outta here, lol
i have way to many to be spending too much time babying the difficult ones, and i'm really surpised that this one has made it through almost 2 summers.
it was about 6 inches tall when i got it, its about 8 inches tall now, pathetic, eh?
All of your Snowbanks are beautiful...even yours, 2pd. I got mine in early spring from ebay and planted it out into the shade, filtered sun at noon. She burned the edges of her leaves but then recovered and had adapted to where she is....I am hopefully awaiting a Y.
Carol
Yours is really nice Kristi, much prettier than mine. I need to go talk to mine. LOL
Mine was putting out real good in early spring and I had it in the foyer to keep a watch on her over the winter. When I put her out the leaves fell off and then it completely died.
MSJen I think you're right, it was probably Wayside... I remember I think, carter or someone posted they were selling it, maybe PerennialGirl Donna, I cant remember, but we all ran to order it...I dont know why I thought I had to have one, the ones I already had, that were gifts were doing good and as it turned out were the only ones that lived!!

I'm glad you got yours for half price... it's not worth paying a lot of money for this one since it's not easy to grow. Snowbank is a pain... the leaves get scorched if it gets too much sun and the bugs just love it. I have mine on the front porch where it gets some shade. Here's a picture from a couple of days ago. The flowers are very similar in color and fragrance to Maya.
What does Maya smell like? (although it looks like I'll get a first nose experience in a couple weeks)
I got mine from Wayside 2 years ago, and she struggled and scorched her first summer in the sun. I overwintered her under 18 in of mulch outside, and she died to the ground, returned in a shady spot, but no blooms last year. This year I over wintered her in the GH, and put her out in May in a shady spot with a bud, that bllomed so prettily.
Her foliage was so lovely; then she got the S. mites with everyone else, and nearly defoliated.
finally she is coming back, and putting out new leaves. I love her big margins.
I thought Snowbank had white blooms.
Jen I don't do anything with mine. Toss some osmacote on it once a year or some comopost. It's been in the same pot for three years now. The only reason I've kept it this long is because I LOVE the pot and it has to be brought in for the winter. LOL.... I have a very messed up back and I can't lift the old plant out without help. SO- each spring I say I'll replace when I have my husbands help, but then I never do.
My one blossom was a creamy color, like the leaf, with a little pink on the tips after several days. I loved it - worth waiting for after three years? I think so!
She looks similar to one I've seen recently - not sure of the name, banana split?
